Has the rest of the country heard of William & Mary or does VA Tech have more recognition?

My daughter seems like more of a William & Mary person in terms of size and vibe but I worry the rest of the country hasn’t heard of it and/or know it’s a good school. Would a VA Tech degree be better for her career search if she moves out of the area? I know her experience during the four years is so important but we fear spending so much money on a place with low name recognition. (I know it IS a good school academically.)

It is the 2nd oldest college in the country. It is nationally known. Jen Psaki went there. It’s a great school. I really wouldn’t worry about it too much.

Also, it’s a bargain if you’re in state.

Please don't make her go to a large tech school if she would prefer a smaller liberal arts college. The (perhaps) increase in prestige isn't worth it, especially if she then does less well.

Fwiw, I always thought that W&M was more well known, but I'm not an expert.

I am not from this area and I heard of William and Mary well before I heard of VT. (Actually I think the first time I heard of it was probably after the shooting.)

What does she want to study? That should be the driver not name recognition. W&M and VT are very different schools. If she wants liberal arts then go to W&M. If STEM then VT.

I heard of William & Mary vaguely decades ago. I only heard of VA Tech after some Asian guy shot a bunch of people there.

W&M has much stronger name recognition than VT and a stronger reputation both in-state and nationally.

W&M and Vtech are VERY different schools. The people who are hiring know the strengths and weaknesses of both schools.

W&M is very difficult to get in from Nova. You need to be aiming for 75th percentile which is about a 4.47 and 34 ACt. It’s a phenomenal deal if you are applying from VA and can get in

I’m in New England and have always known about William and Mary and generally had the idea of it being quite a strong school. Virginia Tech only came on my radar a few years ago.

Honestly, I'd never heard of VT before I moved to Virginia in my 30's, but I'd definitely heard of W&M. When we moved here and I saw the VT stickers on peoples cars, I thought it was a vo-tech school. Like for auto repair and stuff.

I'm from the midwest and went to college in New England.

I’m from Texas and always knew W&M was an excellent school. I honestly can’t say if I knew about VA Tech till I moved to NoVA

Sadly, this is the case. Outside the mid-Atlantic it was unknown before that.
