I had a lab/pit mix that died in 2018 and was 18 at the time. He was in really good shape until 16 or so and then he slowed down considerably.
I think he was the oldest I know of for a medium-sized dog, but I've heard of toy breeds making it to 22. |

I had to put my 16.5 lab mix down last month. He did so well until 16.25, but his legs started giving out. It was like he went from super active to struggling old many within a month. It was hard to watch, but the 16.5 years he did live were amazing. I look at Petfinder each day trying to decide if I'm really ready for another dog!
