Anyone Accepted to VA Tech?

What does it really take to get into VT? If you have a kid accepted, what high school, gpa, types of courses, sat? They have a high acceptance rate, and yet to hear people tell it you can't get accepted to engineering there unless you are at the top of your HS class. We are at an IB school, if it matters.

I should have added we are in Fairfax County. I think that matters - it's actually easier to get in from out of state or out of this area.

DD was admitted last year (things could be different in 2021). She had a UW 3.75;W 4.22. 1400 SATS (670 M/730 V). Non -engineering.

She went to another state school; one which I (as a Hokie Alum) did not disapprove of.

I wouldn’t be surprised if VT starts heading below 50% acceptance rate over the next few years with the addition of the Common App. It wasn’t that long ago that GT was 60% before adding the Common App.

ENG at VT is probably the hardest ticket in state. The link to the schev data will give you an idea of who got in last year. VT admits a lot but the bar keeps getting raised.

Following this thread for engineering. Also at an IB school. Does VT require IB diploma or have others gotten in with a heavy IB courseload like the 4 core IB classes only.

My DS from fcps was admitted to VT engineering this year. W gpa 4.18 and sat 1540. Took BC calc last year and got a 5. Also taking ap physics C now and post AP CS classes.

How about vt but not engineering?

Any point in applying with a 3.9w and a 1300?

It depends on the major. Animal science? probably not.

English might be ok. It is on the low side though.

Depends on the major. They offer opportunities which means they don’t always go for the highest test scores. But the tougher majors are not an easy path for mediocre students. They give the opportunity but the student has to step up and take it. Also, every other year they seem to go to their waitlist. Who knows this year. Many students who took a semester off bc of Covid will be returning in the fall. Who knows how any if the colleges will handle this numbers game.
Sorry, my post is useless.

I think it is worth applying. The college & major will drive the decision. When you apply to VT you are applying to the specific college within the university. I am not sure if you can see stats by college at VT, that would be really interesting data. The college of Engineering skews the stats up. Naviance should give you some idea from your school based on your stats.

Last year VT pulled a lot of folks from their waitlist since approx 600 international students were not going to attend due to Covid. The year before they didn’t pull anyone of the waitlist.

Def apply. My niece got in with slightly lower stats for business. She did ED and had good ECs though.

Average stats for VT engineering is 4.1W 1350 SAT.

It’s not a gimme that’s for sure. It was a safety for my daughter who ended up getting into UVA ED so she withdrew her app but her counselor told her that the Tech rep advised all pre-med types to apply with a Human Development major and they’d get in easily. So it does definitely depend on major selection. Daughters BF is in the engineering school at VT and had a 1460 SAT And just under. 4.0 from a LCPS.

VT used to have a great data portal where you could see admissions stats by major with GPA and SAT/ACT. They've changed it and now you can still see admission rates by major but it doesn't have the GPA/test scores info so it's a lot less useful. Still, if it's helpful check out: https://udc.vt.edu/irdata/data/students/admission/index
