I’m 47. 50% gray hair.... should I just grow it out?

My hair is 50% gray. I’m getting of coloring it, however, I think going gray will really age me. When did you finally just let your hair do what it is meant to be? I have long hair...past my shoulders.

Should have said.....I’m getting sick of coloring it

Going gray WILL age you. Maybe have a colorist help you through the process so it looks attractive?

I tried it (I'm closer to 90% gray) and it aged me. I am pretty fair with cool undertones and it just didn't work. The ppl I see on Instagram who are purposefully going gray seem to have warmer undertones.

I'm on the every 5 week touch-up schedule and I don't love it, but I didn't like looking old more. And there is maintenance with gray hair -- purple or blue shampoo to reduce yellowing/brassiness. You may also find that you need to have it toned regularly.

That said, there is no harm in trying it. You can always go back if you hate it. FWIW, I didn't grow mine out -- my initial step was to bleach it and then tone it to bring some cohesiveness between the grays and bleached.

PP here - I tried it when I was 41/42. I'm 44 now -- kept it for about 2 years.

I’m in my 30s and have decided to go gray naturally (never dyed my hair in my life). I follow this Instagram and don’t think these women look aged. They look vibrant.

Some people look awesome with gray hair, some just look old. I’m in the latter category, so unfortunately I will be coloring for the foreseeable future. But I encourage anyone who is gray curious to give it a shot!

I am turning 50 and haven't colored since March. The lockdown has given me a lot of time to grow it out. I was just so sick of coloring it and soaking my head in chemicals on a regular basis. I do feel like it has aged me, but I also think it looks way more natural. My ends are brassy and awful looking, and I can't wait until I can cut the bottom half off and my whole head will be gray/dark brown. (I have long hair too.). I like feeling and looking natural, and I'm trying to accept the reality that I am aging. I'm spending more time and money on my face (retinol and Skinceuticals CE ferulic more regularly than I was) and I feel like my skin looks younger than 50, and that helps a lot.

I'm 47 and 75% gray, but I am loving it. It has so much more platinum than gray. I have been growing it out since March last year during lock-down.
I find the key to not looking so aged is really kicking up my makeup. I was quite minimalist with makeup before and could get away with it. Now, with the gray almost fully grown in, I cannot go without or else I look washed out and old.
I've also started wearing more black, gray and brighter colors. All look great with the hair.
I refuse to slather my head in chemicals and am so happy I am letting it go natural. Good luck, OP.

This is tough. Occasionally I’ll see an Instagram pic of a younger woman gray and it look nice- but this must be rare. I’ve never seen a real woman in the wild under 50 let the gray go and have to look good. It always seems to age them and add to frump look. Long gray hair is even harder to pull off- it is coarser. Personally, unless you are one of the silver unicorns on Instagram, I think under 60 is too young to be gray. I’m medium brown, 37 and that is my plan- due until 60. I’m only about 5% gray now.

Was it a gradual change or sudden? I'm 45 and have 3 white hairs so I just highlight and keep the base the same.

I am 44 and have 80% gray in front and probably 50% elsewhere. The problem for me is that while gray hair is OKAY (I have very warm undertones so my skin looks better) it's not as good looking as not-gray as a color... but in addition to the pain that it is to dye it every 3/weeks, it was SO damaged from all the dying (if you dye your roots every 3 weeks as I really did need to, you are dying the root hair multiple times - so unless you cut it short, you have really damaged hair). I think the damaged hair is also aging... whcih people don't understand.

I don't know what I am going to do - probably some low lights so that the roots aren't as visible as when I did an all over color. So I have 1/2 gray.

Right now it looks awful but I literally AWALYS pull it back into a twist for calls and the only other people who see my are my fmaily, so Ifigure a pandemic is the time to do it

I am 44 and have been dying my hair for ... over a dozen years? A long time. My dad was grey before he was 20.

My grey hairs grow in kinky and don't "match" in style with my regular hair which is frizzy at best. Plus, I have brown hair and grey hair makes my face look washed out.

So I will keep dying until I can fully realize my dream of never leaving my home long term, and just walking on the beach with my dog while wearing a hat.

Love this. Thanks for sharing. I’m 43 and maybe 10 percent gray, but almost all of that has happened in the last 12 months. So far I like it but it helps to see other people who wear their silver proudly!
