I’m 47. 50% gray hair.... should I just grow it out?

I’ve never seen a real woman in the wild under 50 let the gray go and have to look good. It always seems to age them and add to frump look. Long gray hair is even harder to pull off- it is coarser. Personally, unless you are one of the silver unicorns on Instagram, I think under 60 is too young to be gray. I’m medium brown, 37 and that is my plan- due until 60. I’m only about 5% gray now.

And those Instagram pics are photoshopped! No one really looks good with grey hair and it ages the hell out of you. My SIL has unbelievable thick gorgeous hair and a beautiful face and went all natural grey when she was about 40 ish and what a transformation. Not a good one . . Went from a striking beauty to old hag in an instant.

All looking at that insta account does for me is make me determined to start dying my hair again post covid. I, too, have not dyed my hair since March and it is healthy but I know the grey makes me look so much older. I think 50 is too young to give up on my appearance.

Mid 50as here. I haven't dyed mine since February. I had been coloring my hair for years, so I assumed that I had a ton of gray. But in growing it out, I have discovered that I just have a few grey streaks at the front but the rest is a muddy brown. I was planning to transition into gray in a few years anyway and thought I would just stop dying it now. But it just looks bad.

Everyone is different. Some people look great with early gray. I tried the grow out during pandemic. I lasted 11 months and then it was clear that natural was not going to cut it. I just colored my hair at the salon last week. I was less than 25% gray, so I look just faded and washed out. I REALLY wanted to be done coloring and look edgy and amazing...but I am 45 with a bit of gray allover no cool streaks--so I looked lame and tired. Maybe I will try again at 55 or so. Best of luck to you!

I’m 48 and starting to think I just DGAF. Pandemic has made my husband intolerable and I’m not in the market for attention so who the bell am I trying to impress?

Fight it.
Dont give up.

I would rather be fat than gray.

People will ignore you and also it will impact your career

You are aging. Embrace it. Gray hair looks better and less phony. Your hair will also look healthier. One upside of the pandemic is women stopped coloring their hair so you see way more gray hair out there. The more people have it, the less “aging” it will look because norms will have changed.

I’m 50 and about 90% gray. After much deliberation and watching my greys grow out during quarantine, I’ve decided to stick with coloring and re-evaluate when I turn 55. While I would love the ease of going gray, the reality is that I’m not ready to look older. DH says he would be OK with me going gray, but he’s still in his prime and I don’t want a George and Barbara comparison. So, back to the salon I go.

Grey hair very trendy right now with a number of kpop singers.

Gray hair looks stylish on people under the age of 30, and when it's clearly been attained through bleaching and coloring.

Most of the Instagram women look like they're in their 30s. A woman in her late forties or fifties won't look like that.

No one in their 40s and 50s is convincing people that they're *not* that age, regardless of hair color. The desperation to cling to youth among women so needy for the male gaze is really sad. Embrace that you've been on this earth long enough to go gray.

No. Absolutely not. It will make you look old.

Plenty of women on Grombre (if that's that Instagram you're talking about) are clearly 40s/50s+. They just all have beautiful skin. And THAT'S the main factor in whether gray hair will look good on you. Put down the dye and double up on sunscreen, hydration, good nutrition, sleep, exercise, reduced stress.
