I disagree with his assessment that there is no health reason for schools to be closed. My daughter is in 10th grade and although I wish school were in session, it is not going to be back to normal. I prefer a consistent distance learning to whatever hybrid schedule + online schedule schools will put into place in March. I don't think the online version will be as good as it is now (it's not great, but it's been OK). Requiring teachers to teach two groups of hybrid classes PLUS one group of fully virtual is a mess. |
| Shouldn't it be based more on the vaccine schedule? |
| I agree with the thrust. But 1 April may be more realistic/reasonable. |
Your daughter is in 10th? How good for her - and for you! But have you thought of little kids who just can't hack staring at the screen all day? So yes, let's all go back. And if you're not happy with hybrid, you can either homeschool, or supplement, or go private. |
No, I don't want to do any of those options. I would prefer high school, at least, to stay virtual, until kids can go back to school as normal (meaning regular school day, 5 days a week, no masks etc,) As for younger kids, I don't think going back to a hybrid schedule 2 days a week is really going to do much for child care concerns either. And as bad as you think distance learning is, I think hybrid+distance teaching will be worse. |
| I think one reason our rates of spread are pretty low in the counties close in to DC are that our schools have been closed and colleges have been online. Our hospitals aren't overwhelmed as they are so many other places. |
Most kids can hack screens all day. The issue is they need parents or a caretaker supporting and assisting them. |
| Larry Hogan is an ass. For a Republican, he sure likes to micromanage Maryland school districts. |
| Words are great, but I am not even going to worry about this until I see some actual response from MCPS. |
Someone has to...if they don’t get pushed , it will be DL forever! |
| MCPS just issued a statement saying they are deeply concerned by the abrupt change coming from the Governor |
Abrupt? It’s been 10 months. |
| He can say whatever but it's not up to him and given the lack of progress with vaccine, it's not going to happen. Keep in mind when this thing started last March, some talked about kids going back to school before summer vacation of 2020. Looking back, how stupid was that? This summer is worse than last summer. We are not going back for many more months. |
But up till now, there were metrics for reopening schools. We haven't met the metrics at ALL. Cases are very high. Spread is very high all across MD. The abrupt change was the decision that these reopening metrics no longer need to be followed, and we need to return to hybrid schooling because of a date on a calendar, not because certain conditions have been met. |
| It won't happen in PGCPS. The teachers' union won't allow it. |
