Hi all,
I've kept my DS from playing on his team this year because we have high risk family members. He seems self conscious about going back to the same team after sitting out a year (and a lot of turnover the prior year means he doesn't have close friends on the team, anyway), so is considering doing tryouts for a different travel team. Though he's been working out at home, he will clearly be off his game for late spring tryouts. Thus, I'm wondering about signing him up for a lot of summer soccer to get him ready for fall. Does anyone know if clubs will be doing summer tryouts for fall teams? I think in normal years, it would only be informal tryouts to fill in unexpected gaps in rosters, but I'm thinking this year might be different. Anyone have any idea? |
Has COVID gone away? |
COVID has not. People moves to a better location/place. |
| errr.. tryouts are usually in late April or very early may for the fall season |
| If you stick with a recreational team then you are fine and can sign up in august |
this, summer soccer won't help when try outs are in spring |
|
There are tryouts happening now for this Spring. As a coach I’d recommend you start now and not wait for Summer. Get your work in during Spring so in Fall you’re close to optimal performance. If you wait for Summer tryouts you’ll be regarded as mediocre due to lack of activity and rusty touches on the ball.
Hope this helps! |
Thanks for the good advice. DC will need to continue social distancing until a couple of family members get the second dose of the vaccine, so will not play this spring (at least not gameplay on team) by late Spring. I'm wondering if people expecting any different landscape for, say, July or August tryouts for joining a team at the end of summer. If not, we might do a rec team and a lot of clinics in fall, but we're hoping he could at least make a lower level travel team for fall and then work his way up after that. |
| you can always make a lower travel team if that's the goal. There are clubs that will take your kid and put them on the bottom team even without tryouts |
| I expect tryouts to return to a similar format to what they were in prior years. |
I do too. I assume they will Covid disclosures and health safety measures. Temps taken, masks when not actively playing. Much like practices and games now. They should also make it VERY clear that you will be given another tryout if you have to quarantine or been exposed to Covid. Soccer parents are nuts and would risk everyone else's health to make sure their kid didn't miss a tryout---ignoring safety guidelines. |
I wouldn't be surprised if some clubs do something similar as last year where current players keep their roster spot and tryouts are for new players. Totally a guess. |
| play rec soccer |

Due to COVID, my DD has not been on a team since March 2020 but she has been practicing & exercising quite a bit on her own at home. Hence, her technical skills, first touch and dribbling speed improved a lot.
I recommend your DS to do the same if he’s planning to do tryouts this Spring. |
Exactly what I was thinking. Summer will be too little too late. You can sign up now for clinics. |
