Richmond Ultimate Cup

Is this a good tournament for girls?

I find the point awarding system rather phony and tacky.

Anyone partaken in it before?

It is not a bad tournament if you can't get into JefCup but Loudoun is probably a better fit for clubs in the DC suburbs.

That’s for college - and it’s not a better tournament just because of location

The competition is better at Loudoun. It isn’t even close.

I don't know about Loudoun but the showcase had some very competitive teams in the top bracket across age brackets. For a preseason showcase, Loudoun is a good pick.

Quality of the tournament they run and results of the top teams in ECNL are in fact two different things and one doesn’t influence the other

I can’t find it on the website. When are schedules released? Anyone that’s went in the past chime in

We went a couple years back as a U13 team. Perfectly fine tournament that will have your DD see some teams they don't normally play against. No reason not to attend it if you have an open weekend. Facilities good; scores updated quickly; good location.

Thanks so much for your post. Positive. Cheerful. Helpful. Hard to come across on DCUM so my heartfelt thanks.

However, don’t you find the point system rather ludicrous? Give points for goals and clean sheets?

PP here... we've been to a couple tournaments with this system. Jeff Cup does it too. It's a way to pretty much guarantee there won't be a tie and essentially incorporates what other tournaments do, just as points up front. Most, if not all, tournaments give 3 points W, 1 point T, and 0 for a loss... if there is a tie in a bracket, then it goes to something like goal difference, then goals scored, then goals conceded, and maybe 1 point extra for a shutout. So, this tournament and Jeff Cup put all this right up front. It's all the same and again, almost certainly eliminates any ties because wins/losses/ties, plus goals scored (even for losing sides) add up to your point total. Hope you go!

I don’t see it as often with my kids these day’s, but this was pretty standard points system 25 years ago when I was growing up on a 10pt scale. 6/3/1 for win/draw/loss, up to 3 goal differential is a point for each (or maybe it was a point per goal?) and a bonus point for shutout. So a 3-0 win is a perfect 10 score and differentiates on an 8-1 win by introducing the tiebreaker earlier. Encourages teams to be mindful of both offense and defense and effectively puts the tiebreakers directly into the standings.

My DD got chosen to play up with the older girls so I guess we’re going. Are you!?
