Which schools have real waitlists vs a polite reject? I am
anticipating getting waitlisted. No connections and DC is well adjusted, 98, good recs etc. Just like everyone else here! |
| Maret is the notorious polite waitlister. |
Do remember, though, that even schools that "politely" (what is polite about not telling the truth???) waitlist occassionally pull a student or two off the list ... so there is always hope! Just don't sit around doing nothing for an alternative while you are hoping.

Sidwell WL is real. Don't take their rejection letter personally.
Maret WL's everyone. They may not do the handwritten note anymore given all the posts about it, but it used to be that the handwritten notes to the effect of "we love meeting your dc!" signaled a real WL. However, their WL, particuarly for K rarely moves. Beauvoir. I was told their WL is real, but I have yet to meet or know of anyone (via these posts) who have been rejected from Beauvoir. The incoming classes for preK and K are much larger than anywhere else so even if the WL is long, there is liklihood of at least a little movement. GDS. Politely WLs everyone. No one gets rejected. |
| What about WES, NPS, St. Patricks, Lowell, Concord Hill, CHDS and Primary Day? |

My dc was rejected from Beauvoir but that was 12 years ago and I think schools make more liberal use of the soft rejection now.
Agree on the WL assessment of the PP. I do know kids who have gotten into GDS off the WL. |
| As a perspective from NYC, there is one top tier school that, at least for HS, applicants actually differs in how it sends out its WL notices. If you receive a letter with a return envelope and a return letter to sign, you child is on the "real" wait list from which students are taken in many years. If you just receive a letter saying you are on the wait list with no instructions as to how to respond, your child is on the "polite" wait list with no chance for admission. They also outright reject applicants. |

Beauvoir waitlists everyone. No one gets rejected. I felt pretty dumb once I figured that out (I had politely been calling to follow up...)
Sidwell's waitlist is real. Most people are rejected; don't feel bad. |
| Primary Day's waitlist is real. |
| WES says that theirs is real. But I've never met anyone who got accepted off of it. |
| Concord Hill's WL is real also. |
