Karen Carpenter died of an overdose - not anorexia

Anonymous
I just read an article that Karen died from an overdose of a drug called emetine - which had a detrimental effect on her body after years of anorexia.

Never knew this til today. I was always under the impression her heart gave out after years of anorexia.

Emetine is a drug used as both an anti-protozoal and to induce vomiting.

Her body was giving out. I don't know what the point of your post is. Are you trying to say people don't die from anorexia?

I'm not sure why you would post this.

This is such a weird and uninformed post. She died of emetine cardiotoxicity which was the direct result of her weakened cardiac state due to anorexia and her taking syrup of ipecac to make herself vomit, which she was doing as a symptom of her anorexia. She died of complications from anorexia. How is this not clear?

She also abused laxatives for many years, which i think is correlated with worse outcomes for recovery. I feel deeply sad for karen carpenter because so much less was known about AN in the 80's and she likely had a mix of genetic, familial and personality factors that made her case particularly difficult. She also had the glaring hot lights of megafame and touring and i think was trying to genuinely beginning to engage in treatment at the time of her death, though it was likely a very difficult path. She was by all accounts a lovely and funny person, much beloved. And she possessed one of the greatest, most haunting voices in pop music.

We need to show some decency and close this thread. This is victim blaming for the disease of anorexia. People like OP need to stop being ghouls and show some human decency. God knows that it is a rare commodity in this country right now.

I mean, to sound like this with very little music and before the days of autotune....what a gift.

This should have a warning on it for those in recovery from ED.

I think the problem is OP is NOT victim-blaming re: anorexia, but saying that anorexia WASN'T the cause... which is not true and not a safe thing to say.

I love Karen Carpenter. Her voice can bring me to tears.

May she Rest In Peace

Especially for something that happened in 1983.

Cut OP some slack. She wasn't trying to discredit her or people with EDs. It does shed some light on the complexity of her issue.

I think it sheds light on the inability of Americans to take a moment, digest facts, and use critical thinking.

As someone who was too young to really know Karen’s story, I appreciate the post. I spent an hour down the rabbit hole looking up Karen’s story. So sad. Blessings to anyone struggling with an ED.
