have anyone experience weight gain or any other side effects with the IUD Mirena? according to my doctor the hormone only gets release to the uterus area and shouldnt affect any other part of the body, but I was doing a little research and it seems that a lot of people gain weight with this IUD.

I'd like to blame my recent weight gain on Mirena, but in reality it started at Thanksgiving--6 weeks before I had Mirena inserted. It's leveled off since the new year...which was when I had the IUD put in. Sigh.

Yes, I gained some weight. The first 3 months were rocky - gained 8-10 lbs, acne, moody. By 6 months, it had settled down to just 5 lbs, no more mood swings and a little less acne. I'm coming up on one year and the weight is gone and the acne is almost completely gone.
I haven't gained weight and in fact lost weight after my placement. Had mine placed at 2 months post partum, still nursing, now weigh less than I did pre pregnancy. Had some spotting first 6 weeks and intermittently have 1-2 days of cramps/spotting (I presume a period but haven't charted to see if it's really cyclical). No mood swings. Some acne but I had that before too.
I don't mean to hijack this thread but I see questions about Mirena a lot. Is there a reason that doctors are pushing or women are choosing Mirena over Paragard, the copper, hormone free IUD? I had a Paragard for 7 years and it was great and there were absolutely no side effects. I can see how Mirena would affect some women the same way bc pills do with respect to weight gain. They contain artificial hormones.
I think if you have a heavy period to begin with, they Mirena may be a better choice because it makes it lighter. Paraguard does not and can make bleeding heavier.
My OB didn't push me toward Mirena; in fact, she encouraged me to consider Paraguard since it lasts 10 years rather than 5. But she confirmed what I'd read--that many patients experience heavy periods with bad cramps on Paraguard; my periods had gotten pretty bad post-pregnancy, and the last thing I wanted was heavier bleeding and more cramping. What sealed the deal for me with Mirena is that it's progesterone-only--no estrogen. I got migraines on BCP and Nuva Ring, so I needed something estrogen-free. |
