Nanny Raises (Annual and Additional Kids)

Anonymous
I'm sure there are tons of threads on this but don't feel like digging.

What is the going rate for hourly raises each year and with each additional child?

For example, we started at $20/hour for our one infant. After a year we upped it to $21/hour. Our nanny's two year mark coincides with the birth of our second child.

How much do we need to offer her at that point?

Thanks so much.

I would just do .25 or .50 in less you are very wealthy and can afford more and in that case another $1.

We added a dollar an hour when we got a second kid, and each year we raise the hourly rate by $1.

I've done $1 / yr + $1 for additional child

OP here. Okay thanks. So is the $1/year indefinite? At what dollar figure does it stop, and then what do you do?

We’ve capped out at $25/hr for the last two years for our 1 toddler. We give a bonus but no raise anymore. But I agree if you can do a $0.50 raise that’s good

We gave raises until we reached $22 an hour. This was several years ago, and we started at $18 an hour for context. We gave an additional raise to $23 an hour when we had a third kid, after several years. But we gave a very generous bonus on her work anniversary every year, which amounted to about a dollar an hour.

No nanny is going to double her workload for $.50 an hour! When I had my second in 2013, my nanny asked for $25/hour.

I gave $2/ raise every year, $3 the year we had a second kid. End of year bonus is 2 weeks pay

Is the nanny going to be in charge of the newborn? That is certainly worth more than $1 per hour!!!! See for example newborn care.
All the extra work for a dollar ????

It doesn’t stop, OP, since the cost-of-living increases don’t stop.

Raises don’t stop until your children are all in full day school. At that point, you either keep your nanny if she will transition to being a family assistant and keep giving raises, or you find a new after school nanny at whatever hourly rate that person commands, and covering days without school yourself.

The 3rd option is keeping your nanny to cover all childcare needs, and freezing her rate to reflect lower hours each year.

OP, some families freeze the rate at whatever point they can still afford it, then they offer other benefits. That might be more flex time (parents come home early or go in later) every couple weeks (but still paid the same amount), more vacation/PTO, health insurance, transportation stipend, even stocking certain foods that you didn’t before. Any or all of them can do wonders for keeping everyone happy.
