Rough cost comparison on childcare

Anonymous
I’m trying to get a general cost comparison for daycare/infant care center vs nanny share vs nanny. Our neighborhood daycare is $2500/mo and we just will have one infant starting there this fall. I am just wondering how much lower the cost may be for a nanny (if at all) or a nanny share with another family. I know this can range, but trying to decide if it’s worth it to just bite the bullet on daycare since it’s more comprehensive. We don’t live in a walking area to conveniences (upper NW DC in Kent/Spring Valley) so it sounds like we’d need a nanny with a car. Any advice is appreciated!

A nanny is the most expensive form of childcare, and a nanny share will only save you 25-33% off the cost of a nanny who only works for your family.

Another way to think about childcare costs is to consider whether YOU would be able to survive on what you would like to pay for Nanny care. I'm guessing that once you add up all the expenses a typical person has (rent, health and car insurance, car expenses, utilities, food, etc.), you'll easily see that a nanny can't live on $14.42 per hour, which is what your top hourly wage seems to be for a 40 hour per week year-round job.

We’re in DC, and we’re in a 2 infant nanny share. Each family pays $12 per hour, so the nanny makes $24 per hour, 40 hours a week, on the books. Taxes cost us about another $300 a month.

Legal or illegal nanny? I know people paying anywhere from 500 to 900 a week... I personally pay more for legal

The nanny we pay legally at $20/hr. ends up costing $4500/month after you account for benefits and taxes.

No question - a good nanny is much more expensive. You get what you pay for.

In home daycare is the cheapest option, followed by a daycare center. A nanny or nanny share will cost way more than either of these options. So if you're worried about the cost, go with daycare. People choose nanny/share because they want/need more individual attention and want more flexibility in hours, definitely not because it's cheaper.

A nanny share will often work out to about the same as a center.

Just because you weren't quoted those numbers doesn't make them false.

Okay? I pay $200. Either way it’s way less than a center

In the exurbs? Or are they fudging ratios and cheating on taxes?

Nanny share costs the same or possibly a little less than 2500/month daycare, actually, if your share is 50/50
