High school student interested in joining debate team not at school

My child attends a high school that had a debate team but the teacher assigned as the advisor did a poor job and ran it into the ground more than a year ago. Does anyone know if there is a non-school based debate club or association that my child could join online?

no, of course not - this is primarily a teacher-led, school run activity

Look for homeschool groups, OP. Most of them are probably only open to actual homeschoolers but you might have a chance if they need another in their team.

When I did high school speech events, there were a couple of schools where there was little interest except for one kid who was really into it. The kid's parent registered with the school, volunteered as the school team coach, paid fees, brought their kid to events, and would wind up volunteering and judging events that their kid wasn't in.

You would have to check in with the school and with the NFL or whatever organization runs debate/speech events in your area to see if this is still done. Probably easier for the online events, but when this is over, if you don't mind getting up early on Saturdays and driving all over the state it is still doable.

I don't know anything about debate but a quick google search turned up this:

It's not exactly debate but: https://www.toastmasters.org/ could be a good experience. Also, https://www.onlinemodelunitednations.org/ is more debate like, but is very focused.
