does anyone have any recommendations for chapter books that i could read to my 6 year old daughter?
Thanks! |
Ivy and Bean series
Little House series Wizard of Oz series Charlotte's Web Stuart Little Magic Tree House (after about 2-3 you'll be bored with the formulaic approach, but the first couple aren't so bad) Alice in Wonderland I have read or am reading all of the above to my 5 (almost 6) year old boy/girl twins and they love them. |
Mine likes the Rainbow Fairies books for reading on her own. An older cousin gave her a bag full. |
betsy and tacy books |
Second Ivy & Bean. Also, Junie B Jones - my kid cracks up - she doesn't behave very responsibly (neither do Ivy & Bean - typical kid stuff) and i think my kid likes to live vicariously through their adventures. |
Junie B. Jones series - my daughter LOVED them! Ok, the main character is sort of ill-mannered, but that's part of what makes these books funny. I know some people really dislike these books because they feel like they set a bad example for their kids, but my kids knew the Junie was not making smart choices. The books are funny and even better if you get them on tape/CD (our library has them) as the person who reads them does a GREAT job. These CD's provided hours of listening on road trips for both kids! |
How did you deal with the adult themes in these books? For example, how do you address the farmer's threatened slaughter of Wilbur and Charlotte's ultimate death, in Charlotte's Web? Similar issues arise in Wizard of Oz. I have not read Little House for a while, but I seem to recall some difficult themes there too. Those themes seem a little hard-hitting for such young kids. When I read Wizard of Oz to my child, I kept having to make creative adjustments to the story to dodge some of these issues (and my child definitely recognized the edits I was making and quizzed me about them). I later read a few articles from educators who warn about books that kids can read/understand, but have trouble processing emotionally. Please understand I'm not suggesting you are doing anything wrong by reading these books to your children. They're your kids, so I assume you know best what they're capable of handling. I'm just curious how you gauged the issue and identified the line without crossing it. |
i am not the pp you are asking but I read the same books to my six year old and have never had any issues. He makes of the stories what he can. I also want to add, we read Roald Dahl books and Judy Blume-he has two little brothers so he thinks Fudgie is hilarious. Horrible Harry, Flat Stanely, A-Z Mysteries, Freddy something or other, Encyclopedia Brown are all popular with my son-as well as Goosebumps. |
sorry PP here-I know you asked about girl books but the ones I mentioned are great for this age group. |
My niece loved Junie B Jones when she was that age. When I was that age I loved Beverly Cleary books such as Henry Huggins and Ramona Quimby Age 8. I think Sweet Valley High has some books for younger girls, but not sure how young, and also the Babysitter's Club but again not sure how young is appropriate. |
My 6 year old dd also enjoys Ivy and Bean. Two other series that were recommended by our local librarian are: Clementine and Judy Moody. We haven't yet read any of these but did check some out. |
MRS PIGGLE-WIGGLE! |
Amber Brown |
Junie B Jones
The Ramona Quimby Series We started Harry Potter during her six year old year toward the end. Charlotte's Web The Spiderwick Chronicles I tried Little House -- no dice. |
Even as a wee kid I loved Grimms Fairy Tales, Tales from Shakespeare (charles/Mary lamb edition) and the like...I think the adult themes/gristly subjects make more sense as I got older, but this made reading completely engrossing and magical, and made me want to read more! These were the same books my parents read in the 40's (Tom Sawyer, etc.) so don't dumb down the themes too much, lest you inadvertently remove the intent of the story. |
