How safe is DC metro

Checking here if there are any frequent or seldom dc metro user here. I would like to start taking kids to DC. But of course wanted to be safe.

Are you worried about covid or worried about getting attacked?

Where are you riding to/from?

What station would you leave from?

Metro has fewer injuries per passenger mile than driving in a private car does.

Depending on when and where you go, it is more or less crowded. Mask compliance is pretty good, and the air is circulated out of the cars frequently. It is probably less safe than a private car from a covid perspective, so that depends on your risk tolerance.

There are occasionally shady people or crimes on the metro. Some of this depends on where and when you're riding, but there's always a chance of seeing something weird or annoying. You can get off at the next stop and get on the next train if it's really a problem, but just ignoring people takes care of 99.9% of situations.

COVID or crime?

Pre-covid, I took the subway frequently and my 6th grader had just started taking the bus and metro by herself (during the day). No problems at all. With COVID, I'm not totally comfortable, but that's no different with DC than any other public transportation.

Thanks. I am going to use orange line from Fairfax/Vienna station and will most probably get down at the Smithsonian. I am more concerned about Covid, never had issue with crime.

Drive. On the metro you can’t control who is or isn’t wearing a mask properly. Why is this even a question. It’s such an easy drive.

It's safe for covid. It's not crowded. People who are getting covid, aren't getting it from using public transportation.

Hundreds of thousands of people in NYC beg to differ

No, transit is pretty safe COVID wise. See this as example of one of many - https://www.amny.com/news/new-study-by-sam-schwartz-finds-no-link-between-covid-19-and-public-transportation/ - since it's not crowded, people can distance and the air exchange per hour is quite good

I’d drive. I went in a handful of times for work and aside from the one off crazies not wearing masks and hitting things, it just feels less safe overall because there are so few people around. I worried more about being alone with the massless crazy
