New to DC with a Question About Pre-K, please help!

Anonymous
Hi DC moms,

We are (probably) moving to DC this spring. We'll be in DC for two years and then back to NYC.

Our dd is 4, she'll turn 5 in November. Will I be able to get her into pre-K in a good public school in DC? We're considering moving to Chevy Chase DC, Spring Valley, Cleveland Park or nearby.

How does pre-K work in DC? If you're zoned for the school, is your child automatically accepted? Or is there a compicated/competitive application process?

Many thanks.

PK is not automatic, and the lottery for the DCPS is coming up (if it isn't already too late). You would be looking at Lafayette, Janney, Eaton, Hearst, Murch or Mann based on the description of neighborhoods. Also, I believe you have to show proof of residency, so you may need to look at one of the private options in the short term.

pre-K at the DC Public schools is by lottery- there's no guarantee. If you live in bounds than you are more likely to get in but it's not for sure. Some of the school have been adding more classrooms over the past few years so perhaps it will be easier now than in previous years.

The deadline for lottery is the 28th. I'd call and see what the protocol is if you haven't established residency yet.

you might have more luck on the DC Public board of this forum.

in addition to the public school options, there are also public charter schools with pre-k. some info:

If you don't get into the public pre-k, it's easy to get into many excellent private preschools for that pre-k year - St. Columba's, St. John's, etc. . . frequently have openings because of students who have left for pre-k at other schools. After that year you could then go into DCPS.

Try School for Friends in Dupont Circle..it is a great school and they sometimes have openings. It is worth the try. We got in during the summer.
