Is it keeping the Key name, or is the Immersion program keeping the Key name?
Anyways, have they started hiring teachers, any word of how many are moving from ASFS to Key? |
The new school will get a new name this spring: https://www.apsva.us/engage/school-naming-renaming-processes-for-2021/
I think it’s too soon to tell on teacher hiring. |
When they were proposing the new school, aps central staff repeatedly told residents in Rosslyn/courthouse that they would make an effort to hire from asfs.
During the pandemic though has anyone noticed that a ridiculous number of the good teachers have left from Asfs though? I don’t want to name names but it seems like every week another teacher is leaving according to the morning announcements. So I think that the teachers you have left are either all very “new” (at Asfs less than three years) or have been at asfs for 15+ years and aren’t going anywhere. Again don’t want to name names but the teachers who have been at Asfs their entire careers aren’t going to go. So I think the teachers moving with the student population was just another lie the aps central staff told to get people to be ok with the school moves. Just like they said that they would prioritize people walking (and then proceeded to draw map after map where kids literally two blocks from the school were zoned out). Heck the school is in courthouse, and no one from courthouse is zoned to go there. It is what it is at this point. |
How did you know other teachers left? My kids interact with their teacher and that’s it. Broadly who has left? Like music teachers or what? |
I’ve had kids at ASFS for the past six years, and my third grader has trouble with distance learning so I sit next to him for his morning classes. So far, the art teacher, the music teacher, and one of the math coaches has left. I dont know if it happened before the school year or not. One of the good second grade teachers left maybe a month ago, and two of the more experienced first grade teachers already didn’t come back this year. They announced the second grade teacher leaving and the art teacher too in the morning announcements. I asked about the music teacher and the math coach. Just looking at the staff pages, it looks like 3/5 of k, first, and second are teachers who either taught a different grade last year or have only been teaching for 1-2 years. |
Any updates on the new school? |
What athletes are you looking for? School board meetings are held every couple weeks. |
You can follow updates on Engage- upcoming tasks and timelines are found at the very bottom of that page: https://www.apsva.us/engage/naming-for-the-new-elementary-at-the-key-site/

Not looking for athletes..interested in academic related news..not so much about what names |
It was a typo meant to say updates. Nonetheless, it will likely be a while before that is all ironed out. Like late spring. Current teachers are struggling with the hand they’ve been dealt! |
It’s probably not a lie, they just haven’t started staffing yet. That happens in the spring. They sent out intent to return surveys this week so that gives them a jumping off point to see how many people are planning on returning. As for people leaving ASFS, there are lots of resignations or LOA happening this year across many different schools. |
The chaos has just begun!! |
Wondering if any more updates on this new school? |
I don’t understand what you are looking for? Tune in to the biweekly school board meetings and maybe you can get some information. As stated before, there likely won’t be hiring until the spring. |
Current ASFS parents are getting updates from the principal of the new school. Do you have a rising Kindergartner? |
