What's your opinion of exposed plywood kitchen cabinets?

I have a mid-century modern house and need a kitchen remodel. I want to keep with the style of the house, but don't love the dark wood that you usually see in mcm kitchens. I was thinking of this plywood look combined with white.

As with exposed concrete, I assume it's an architect's house. I don't like it, but I sort of appreciate it.

My friend has an MCM house and when they re-did the kitchen, they did white Ikea cabinets, white counter around the perimeter, large butcher block island in the middle, a beautiful plywood/birch banquet in the seating area with white table, and re-finished the wood floor in a medium/light tone. It might actually be the natural wood tone with sealer on it.

I love the color combo, which is pretty much the same as your linked pictures of plywood cabinets with white. I think I would prefer my friend's look to the plywood cabinets, but I don't hate the plywood cabinets and think it could look nice if you did it. I think you just have to be careful to make sure it looks finished/polished and not rough.

Looks really nice! Go for it. But by God, that “distressed” wall in pic 3 is deeply upsetting. Though I actually like the cut out fingerpulls quite a bit. Skip the leather loops, they’re going to look incredibly trendy in about 10 minutes, and not in a good way.

Exposed plywood is so elite.

Seriously, what is with that wall?? I thought it was a before pic from when they prepped for the tile backsplash. Hoping the caption just got it wrong.

Sounds nice - what did they do for the backsplash and upper cabinets or wall area? I am concerned about too much white and was thinking of mixing white and light wood/plywood cabinets.

I assume these are luxury plywood?

It's not my cup of tea, but I do like the clean look.

If you like the colors, I would suggest maple wood cabinets. We have them in our vacation home and it's very light and pretty. Being solid wood, they can also be stained or painted later. Not sure you can stain plywood.

Not even remotely favorable.

It makes me wonder why you wouldn't just do birch or some other light-colored wood? I can't imagine exposed plywood would be good for resale if that's a factor you need to consider. And the plywood ceiling looks like you had water damage that you haven't fixed.

They look awful and very cheap.

Take a look at the plywood house in Cambridge, Mass. It’s a modern, three level built by the architect-owner. Think I saw it on Houzz.

Exposed Formica is even better.

Their kitchen is in a corner with two walls and the rest is open to the eating and living area. One kitchen wall is white upper cabinets (flat fronts, no pulls) and one wall is open shelving and a window, then to the left of that is the sliding patio door and eating area. The kitchen backsplash is a geometric tile like the last picture below, but with a gray grout.

I cant find a picture that combines the color scheme and the modern features. The overall effect is something like this, but more modern with the flat-front cabinets and more geometric tile. Also, their butcher block goes down the two short sides of the island and extends for seating on one long side:

Or kind of like this, but again, flat cabinets and open shelving instead of glass:

The tile pattern they used is this, but with gray grout:

I love it. I think it looks clean and modern, and casual.

Part of what I dislike about those ubiquitous white Shaker cabinets is that to me they look fussy. These look the opposite of fussy.
