IVF Costs by Clinic (Out of Pocket)

Anonymous
We (DC residents) will start IVF early next year and insurance won’t cover it. We are 34f/38m unexplained and doing IUI#3 next month. We are looking at CNY and clinics in the Czech Republic but concerned about COVID exposure if we have to fly (we can drive to CNY). For anyone that paid OOP, how much was 1 complete IVF cycle with PGT testing and a frozen transfer and any subsequent FTs at your clinic? Medication estimates would be helpful as well. Thank you in advance.

Our clinic is in Chicago. Fed BCBS insurance, so no IVF coverage.

14K for monitoring, labs, egg retrieval, freezing and one transfer
Each additional FET was 3K
Drugs, Freedom Fertility, 6K. I’m 40 though. Needed a lot.
PGT was I think $250 an embryo plus $350 shipping? But we didn’t get that far so I’m not sure.
Saline sonogram was $550 and we’re trying to get insurance to cover. Unlikely.

We got zero blasts so we ended up getting a refund for the freezing plus transfer that never happened. Ask your clinic about that. Meds were obviously a sunk cost.

we are doing shady grove shared risk donor egg 2:1-- basically $45k for up to 6 rounds, PGT, and all FETs. the FET meds are not terrible, about $800/cycle if you need lupron for suppression.

While the FET meds were no where near as expensive as the stim drugs for egg retrieval, I was surprised at the out of pocket cost. Insurance covered most of it under my medical benefit though, which was great. Lupron was a few hundred, antibiotic and estrogen pills were a nominal copay, and the progesterone supplements were nearly $500! My stim drugs I priced at Freedom Pharmacy and another one (I forget the name now) but both came in between $5700 and $6500. Good luck!

I think I paid $6-$7k for natural cycle ivf. Why don’t you look into that. It’s about the sane inconvenience as IUI. I also did three such a waste of time and mental energy. Do a consult with dr Gordon it Dimattina at dominion at least.

I priced Columbia, Dominion, and Shady Grove in September/October. For a single cycle with PGT and at least one FET (Dominion includes 2 FETs), it's approximately $18k-19k at each of those clinics. Dominion will send you their full price list if you just ask. Shady Grove wouldn't give me a price list until I had a consult with them. We were patients at Columbia at the time so I'm not sure what their policy is regarding whether you can get a price list from them without a consult. We decided to do shared risk at Shady Grove (up to 6 retrievals and unlimited FETs). The cost is scaled by age. I'm 39 so it's $28,500 for us which I believe includes the cost of PGT which is required for my shared risk age group. I'm ordering what I believe to be the minimum amount of medication that will be necessary for the retrieval; it's about $3500 so far. I think there might be an added cost for anesthesia too, though I'm not sure what that will be yet. No idea what the FET medication costs will be yet either.

I’m in LA, so not sure how helpful it will be, but I did two IVF cycles at two different clinics. Each full cycle was $16-18K, including PGS. Meds were about $3k (you can save by buying abroad if you are comfortable). FETs were 4K each. CNY might be worthwhile for you, I know so many people with success there and they are actually reasonably priced, unlike most clinics.

I did a cycle in the Czech Republic ... it was around 5k I believe with everything.

If you qualify for shared risk, it is definitely worth considering (although yes may have changed since I did it ten years ago)

Thank you for the thoughtful responses. I’ll also look into Shady Grove’s Shared Risk program - it would be worth it if the first transfer didn’t work. Without COVID, I’d probably just go abroad but that certainly complicates everything.

Paid about $5,500 per cycle in Germany for monitoring, retrieval, fresh transfer, and medications OOP. We were living there so didn’t seek out an international clinic on purpose. PGS embryo testing is not done in some EU countries, germany included, unless one parent has a documented genetic disorder, FYI. Unsure where the Czech Republic falls re: that but worth investigating if testing is important to you.

Dominion Fertility-- I paid (in Nov 2020) for the $28,500 package including two cycles of IVF and two FET (whether one was successful or not). ICSI is included. I'll pay for PGS testing separately on any embryo viable at $150ea. for the first ten; $100 ea. any over ten. Meds for this first cycle from MDR (their recommended pharmacy in CA) were $5880 (Follistim/Menopur/Ganirelix/Trigger). I'm 35 and wanted to bank embryos.

I found Dominion to be be much more transparent with costs and they have a shared risk program for IVF and DE IVF. They have a deal with Invitae for the $150 per embryo PGT.

I just got the price from shady grove. I have Aetna insurance and the rate for single cycle is $7000/7500 with icsi/ $1850 for FET, no storage. For two cycles and unlimited fet, $18,500.

I did two cycles at Columbia fertility and it was about $19,000 per cycle and $4000+ Meds each cycle. I live in DC and had fed BCBS and just switched to Aetna for this year.

I’m so relieved that the cost at shady grove is so much less and I wish I had know about the Aetna discounted rate sooner.

But Shady Grove is horrible, they did not quote me that rate.
