I did not expect to be thrilled by the crowd at the Conservative Political Action Conference:
|
Great. Can we expect to see future support from conservatives on gay marriage, adoption, or the military?
Or perhaps just being invited to a conference should be enough for gay people to vote republican in the future? |
OP here. I did not mean to imply that total justice is upon us, but I do think it's a milestone that gay-bashing got more boos than cheers at a conservative event. I know there have always been conservatives who were not anti-gay, and some who were gay, and perhaps even some who were gay without being publicly anti-gay, but I think that gay-bashing being unacceptable on the right is a new and welcome phenomenon! |
Yes, I se that point is valid. I am a bit concerned about tokenism here, but your point is valid that it is no longer OK to say "I don't approve. There I said it. Deal." At least they recognize that they need to explore the role of gays in conservative life. |
Conservative here. I had no problem with gay marriage and welcome more gays to the party. I think this is an age thing--the youth of the party are fine with gay marriage and we are the future. It's a new world out there and there are a lot of gay people who have built businesses and would like to keep their hard earned money. I also think as someone who respects the constitution that everyone has a right to happiness and it's not my business to impede on someone's relationship. I just don't care. |
I would like to believe that, but the speaker in the clip represented California Young Americans for Freedom. That does not sound like a group of old people. |
What a moron! He thinks that "The lesbians at Smith College protest better than you do!" is like some kind of huge insult! Ewwww, I'm scared! |
Mostly liberal here: I like you. I think we'd be friends if I knew you. |
Thank you. I tend to like most people and usually keep my politics quiet in public. My main issue is getting the government out of my life and personal responsibility--my success and failure is through my own deeds and I tend not to ask the government to either help me when I am down or to take more of my money when I am doing well. The social stuff..again none of my business..just hope everyone is happy at finding love. Love is a wonderful thing. |
A time machine has brought us a example of an extinct Republican species. Quick, call the zoo. |
The reason gatherings at CPAC and other conservative gatherings are starting to sound more ... dare I say moderate?! ... is because they are increasingly being attended by independents that are so appalled at the liberal policies being pushed successfully by current democrats in office. If the far right conservatives behave as they usually do ... don't think the alliance will last too long. But it is an opportunity for them and bad news for democrats for the November elections. |
Not quite. CPAC this year had a large contingent of libertarians. As a result, Ron Paul won the straw poll (to the embarrassment of many). While libertarians may frequently be "independents" and probably hate much of the "liberal agenda", they were unlikely to have ever been Obama, Pelosi, or Reid supporters. Paul, after all, is technically a Republican. The gathering of wack jobs that makes up today's Republican Party can agree on anything other than opposition to Democrats. |
