I posted on Infants the other day about my Spectra breast acting finicky recently. This morning it died during my AM session.
My baby is just about 6 months and eats a combo of 2/3 breast milk to 1/3 formula. I exclusively pump and baby hasnt nursed since week 5/6 (it wasnt going well). I was planning on weaning next month anyway and this feels like the sign to be done. Any advice on managing weaning in this situation? Target has a Haakaa in stock. Will that do enough to keep me comfortable? My insurance will cover a pump (possibly a rental) but it and my OB's office are closed until tomorrow. My sense is it wont be able to obtain it in time; id have to get paperwork, identify a medical equipment company and then actually get the machine in my hands. My breasts will be in discomfort this afternoon. |
| How about a Medela hand pump? May work better than Haakaa. |
| I would go buy an electric pump anywhere you can. A haaka won't be enough and you will risk mastitis. I think you can find one for $100. Or maybe even a used spectra on Facebook marketplace? |
Medela hand pump is also in stock at Target. |
| Do hospitals still rent them? Might be good for a month or two. |
| Spectra has great customer service. If you’re the original owner and have the purchase order they can start working on getting you a new one. They were very helpful. Good luck though, the same thing happened to me and I got a cheap one on our neighborhood list serv. Maybe ask there for an emergency holdover. Many moms hold on to them when they’re done. |
| I’d try Haakaa (or any hand pump, honestly) + Sudafed. Good luck OP! |
Unfortunately i am not the original owner and its 3.5 years old (age if child it was originally purchased to serve). |

Did you get one through your insurance yet?
Hand express to relieve engorgement and you could always try latching again |
This is a great manual pump and will relieve engorgement better than a Haakaa. I tried using a Haakaa while nursing and thought it was pretty useless. |
| I think it's a sign to be done. |

Thanks everyone! I have acquired the Medela manual pump which I will use today. Contacting insurance and my doctor tomorrow (both are closed for now).
Thank goodness baby is fine with formula and we have started food, which she is super into. Hopefully she won’t really notice/care if I am done. |
| Post on a neighborhood listserv. I have 3 pumps. I would lend out my second Spectra gladly to a mom I’m need.’ |
If you need a pump fast, try. Selling the Breastfeeding Center in the morning. I filled out the form to rent a hospital grade pump and had it the next day, but there’s an ASAP option. I’m sure you could pick it up midday tomorrow (pick up hours are 11-1). |
