What is the deal with initial necklaces?

Anonymous
I see in the Amazon order history that my young teen boy has just bought a woman's initial necklace. But it is for his initial, rather than the initial of the young woman he is "dating" (and there is zero chance he has bought this for himself as some sort of identity expression). Is that a "thing" now, like she wears his initial to show they are an item, or is he misunderstanding whose initial it should be? I would assume it should be her initial, but maybe I'm totally wrong....like maybe I'm thinking of a monogram and this is a different thing....

Help! If the necklace should be her initial, or both their initials, I'm sure he would want to know before he gives it to her. Otherwise I'm happy to keep pretending I never noticed it in the order history. Thanks.

Or maybe he wants to wear it himself?
Either way, better than a tattoo.

I'd have gotten a really big kick out of wearing an initial of one of my high school boyfriends! But that was like 30 years ago so...

There is 0 chance he wants to wear it himself (a plainer style I might wonder, but no question with this one).

And, yes, if the gift was a tattoo (ha!) obviously it would be his name on her. So maybe it should be his initial on the necklace.

Yes it's a thing. My son bought his girlfriend his initial last year.

Was there a name for this back then? I feel like there was and now I’m blanking.

Yes, men have always felt the need to mark their territory.

Why is your "young teen boy" dating a "young woman"? If he's a young teen (13 or 14) shouldn't he be dating a young teen girl around his same age if he's going to date?

A "woman" is someone 18 or older.

That's a cute gift for his girlfriend.

Any chance he has a new girlfriend (that just happens to have the same first initial as him?)

I'm 45 (so started dating about 30 years ago) and don't remember anyone doing this. We wore our boyfriends' letterman jackets though. I never see young ladies doing that now.
