I just signed up for an Instagram account (due to the urging of my daughter).
It has been like thirty minutes and it says I have already five followers.

How did these people begin to follow me so quickly?

your setting is on public instead of private. Instagram offers suggestions of people to follow--sometimes people you know on Facebook, sometimes people who know someone you know, and sometimes it's "new to instagram" people. Go into settings, poke around, and find the one that says keep account private or whatever. And you can kick the randos off your followers list.
