Individual swim instruction for easily embarrassed 15 year old girl

Anonymous
My anxious 15 year old daughter has been fearful of water since she had a bad experience when she was young. She can swim, but is not a strong swimmer. Her school requires a yearly swim test and last year they recommended that she take swim at school for a PE credit to strengthen her skills. She told me that during the test there was a backup of other swimmers behind her because she was so slow and that it was very embarrassing for her. She’s also very self conscious being in a bathing suit at school and worries about a multitude of other possible embarrassing things that could occur during swim class. I’d like to find a one-on-one swim instructor to help her get her skills up to speed outside of school. A woman would probably be best, although it’s not an absolute requirement. Most important would be that the instructor be a teacher sensitive to the angst of a teen girl who is easily embarrassed and lacks self confidence. Does anybody have any recommendations?

Monica Barry, a teacher at Stone Ridge and coach at Kenwood, is great.

Definitely chose a female. My DS taught swimming when he was a teenager and the young girls pitched a fit when they got a male instructor. He was not offended 😊

Are you planning to do this now?

If so, please reconsider. Our area hospitals are close to capacity with the Halloween crowd and will go over capacity with the Thanksgiving crowd. We won't know where to put patients if people don't stop living their life.

Please stay home, do not gather, do not go inside public buildings.

Agreed. She would also know a bunch of college girls who could help too if she’s not available

+1. My HS DS takes lessons there to pass a swim test. He can swim basically, but needed the longer endurance and more accurate strokes. Individual instruction and you can choose which ever coach you want.

I am not planning to do this right now, but would like to have things set up for the future. I was hoping to do it late spring or early summer, although only if things are safe. We are all home full time (both parents working from home and both kids learning from home).

Arlington keeps a list of private instructors. We used one for a similar situation.

Swimlabs in Gaithersburg might be great. The pools are endless pools so it's very private. There are several older women who work there although my son has a male, so i can't give you any names.
