Hospital staff shortage, Hogan press conf Dec 1st

Anonymous
Hogan is calling for more doctors and nurses to work in MD hospitals, students to earn credit hours working in hospitals, and graduating students to license early so they can get to work ASAP.
MD is facing a looming shortage of hospitals beds, doctors and nurses. The surge comes from rural areas like the eastern shore (Somerset) and western MD (Garrett and Allegany).

From WaPo -

"A Nov. 13 modeling estimate from Johns Hopkins Medicine — which accurately predicted 1,400 coronavirus patients in Maryland would be hospitalized by Thanksgiving — outlined four scenarios for the winter surge and its impact on the state’s health-care system.

Just one model, called the “optimistic scenario,” predicts the state will have enough beds. It calls that scenario, showing a peak of 5,000 people hospitalized with the coronavirus around February, “highly unlikely” based on the rapid ascent of cases now.

A “moderate scenario” model predicts a peak of more than 8,000 patients by February, and a “pessimistic” one predicts 10,000. Maryland has about 10,000 beds statewide for all patients, and as of Wednesday, about half were available for coronavirus patients.

The “catastrophic scenario” predicted “peak hospitalization levels of about 15,000 patients, assuming no further modifications of [the public’s] behavior.” "

Why should they risk their lives? That's sick he is demanding people volunteer to do shifts but will not shut down schools, restaurants, travel, etc.

This. Have unqualified students work for “credit hours” but not close restaurants!? Insane. And you can’t pay me enough overtime to work extra shifts with so little regard for my safety at work.

In fairness, he is begging for federal money that would allow him to shut down industries like restaurants and bars.

He can shut them down. He is more worried about reelection and being popular at this point. Same reason why he changed school start/stop to help Ocean City/Travel. He can do carry out only for restaurants.

Does he want unqualified students treating him?

If he thought his he's going to get federal money from THIS administration to close businesses, he's out of his damn mind.

Doctors and nurses need to go on strike.

This should not be happening. This situation could have been avoided. It isn't March where we didn't know what was happening.

whelp.. we are going to have to start rationing medical care even if you have great insurance.

He may be worried about being popular for future political ambitions, but he is a lame duck governor due to term limits and he has not announced any other plans to run for any elected office. He may run in 2024, but right now, he is not running for anything.

I’m an ICU nurse in Maryland. I can make about $5k, plus health insurance, a week to work full time with Covid patients. If I’m willing to temporarily relocate to several areas, I can make $7500. That’s $350,000 a year.

Why on earth would I volunteer my time? I’m not a “helper,” I’m a very highly trained and educated, licensed professional.

It’s time society acknowledges that this profession is valuable and pay accordingly.

Hogan isn’t asking icu nurses to work free.

He’s looking for more workers to go to nursing homes and testing sites.

If I am paid to stay home, I wll. I won't be as of today, so I'm going into work. I'm not sure of the disconnect. Not many people going out to TGIFridays just to hang out. If you work in food service, you need to be open to support your family.

I am not sure why everyone is yelling at Hogan to close things down. Stay home on your own. Why do you need someone to tell you to do so?
