529 Tips for investment

Anonymous
We have 3 children, the oldest is a freshman in high school. We saved early and are at the point that school will be fully funded for wherever they decide to attend. The oldest knows this, we had a sit down discussion at the beginning of 9th grade to talk about expectation for high school and beyond.

Any recommendations for diversification or re-allocation / investment of 529? Is it worth putting some of the $ into the private school 529 or just keep it in time based funds?

Thanks for sharing

3 kids x 4 years x 60-70k (max cost) = 720k - 840k saved?

I have always had my 529s invested balls to the wall in equities. It’s not a popular plan, but I’m so far ahead now that a market correction will not matter. There will be money left over in the accounts when all is said and done.

If I could do it over again, I would've done it this way.

We have four kids, three already through college. We always used the enrollment-based portfolios. We definitely gave up some upside, but never worried in down markets, either. The account for our high school freshman DD is fully funded, and we will leave it in the same portfolio.

We’ve been 100% index equities since 2008 in our 529 and have been super lucky with market appreciation. But it was risky and we knew it. Your risk tolerance and timeline should drive investment decisions.

We use Roth funds instead. 529s just ensure the college (read investment houses) make you pay full price.
