I want to slowly rebuild my wardrobe. I have been putting it off thinking I will fit into my "thin" clothes I have stored at my parents house. Im 34 and mainly wear old navy/gap jeans and sweatshirts or sweaters. In the summer I have a few tees but boxy/oversized. Really I'm mainly in jeans, hoodies and vans.
I have hesitated buying real clothing because of my weight. But I'm tired of looking like I'm 12. I want to buy some classic items I can add in rotation. I'm 235. 5'5. apple shaped. Very very top heavy. 2-3xl in tops and pants/jeans 16/18 not sure what that equates to ...34? 35? Not interested in dresses/skirts right now. Non denim pants, sweaters, long sleeve tops, nice tees, and a jacket? |
| Cropped pants (think: Talbots) with a blouse and flats. |
|
I posted the Talbots pants. I’m mid-40s, 5’9” and 165. After a few c-sections, my tummy is fluffy, my butt is big, and my boobs are DDs. In short: curvy, and tall.
I gave up on J Crew a decade ago. I feel like their clothes are made for skinny, straight women. Your stats sound short and curvy. I think you should opt for ankle/slightly cropped pants in a curvy fit. Ideally the ankle should be loose, not fitted like leggings. You don’t want to look like an apple; you’ll look better with a cuff. |
Take this or leave it, OP, it's just my opinion, but cropped pants make short women look shorter. |
|
Op here thanks for the Talbot links!
I really dislike cropped pants on me. I find I look better with pants that hit right at or under my ankle bones. It might be just me. My legs are the "smallest" or most fit part of me if that makes sense. Even now w my hoodies I find "skinny" or straight jeans to be best. Not opposed to it! I can try! Maybe better for the summer/spring. |
|
Op again
I still have a weird love for jcrew- maybe from their golden years. I see they have extended sizes now. I was thinking of trying something. I tried some plus items from madewell and only one sweater for nicely. The rest was waaayyy too boxy and all the shirts seemed cropped. I was so bummed. |

IF you're an apple shape, don't buy curvy pants. They won't fit right and it will drive you crazy. Stick with straight styles.
https://theconceptwardrobe.com/build-a-wardrobe/apple-body-shape I'm an apple shape and have had a hard time buying clothes this season. I'm not even looking for anything fancy, but it's just been a struggle to find decent plus size basics this season. |
|
The trick is to look balanced. Are you apple shaped/too heavy? If so, then you likely need some balance on your bottom half. Ankle pants that flare out a bit draw the eye to your naked ankle and cute shoes.
If you google what short curvy women or apple shaped women should wear, you’ll see what I’m talking about. |
| I'm almost exactly your size, OP, except hourglass instead of apple, and short-waisted. I love Talbots because as well as Plus, they have a great selection of Plus Petite, which is basically Plus with shorter waist and sleeves, so you can mix and match their separates to get the proportions right top and bottom. At your height, keep a close eye on the length of pants given in the descriptions; I find 30" is spot on for me but 31" is distinctly too long; 29" is a good ankle length but I'd only wear pants that short in summer. Talbots is having huge sales right now, btw. Let's keep them in business, because I don't know what I'll do if they don't survive COVID! |
|
People who are 5'5" should NOT wear cropped pants! That will make you look even shorter and fatter than you are!
You want a LONG leg line. Ignore anyone who ays "capri" to you. |
|
Got it on capri. I prefer longer leg anyway. I will look through Talbot's. It's hard because I distinctly remember my mother shopping there as a child and it was very much an older lady store. I guess I'm an older lady 😂
Any thoughts on the links I posted for pants or shoes? |
