Hudl or Trace

Anonymous
From an outsider looking in, can anybody give their review on the overall quality/use of either Hudl or Trace? It appears to me that Hudl is more professional looking with much more information whereas Trace seems genuinely just to be a shortcut of editing game film.

Hudl used to need a someone to physically film matches but it was a great service

Trace is good. Cutting film is easy

Hudl costs more but you actually get more. It records video but also also gets some statistical information as well. Trace is literally just a camera service that helps clip videos; it doesn’t cost as much but it also doesn’t do anywhere near as much.

Hudl is an okay tool, but not much more than that. The 'stats' are very elementary and not very in-depth, nor do they give much in assistance. Trace is, as stated above, a quick tool to generate clips. Both are basically attempts to be 'hi-tech' but both fail. Also, if the sun is in a bad spot, Trace is meaningless. We'll see how useful both are since they also require a person to operate it.

HUDL
Pros:
- better for multi-sport programs, can handle any sport
- allows for use of any kind of footage, from any source. Generally can produce higher quality highlight highlight reels
- allows for more custom tailoring of highlight footage
- can isolate more types of set pieces than Trace, making it more useful for coaches
- because you are taking your own video, interfaces better with InStat
Cons
- still requires someone to take video, which can be difficult
- requires you to pay Hudl to mark events, or a parent to do it
- can be slightly more expensive
- slightly harder for kids to use
Verdict: If you can get over the extra requirements that HUDL poses, it's a more capable system.

Trace
Pros:
- easy camera setup, no pan/tilt operator required
- pretty good customer service
- reasonable college coach following
- easy for kids to produce their own video compilations
Cons:
- lousy video quality, can be hard to see action on far side or near goals
- tracers fail fairly often, players miss "events"
- cannot be used for skills video
- cannot interface with anything but Trace cameras
Verdict: Budget gear for the masses. A nice idea when it works. Probably good enough for most folks.

Our club purchased HUDL. I think it's overrated and the money could've been used elsewhere.
