withdrawal method? anyone use it before TTC?

Anonymous
we are going to start trying for #2 but wanted to wait a few months (big trip planned) but have gone off the pill and am assuming that it will take me a while to get a regular cycle. While I assumed the withdrawal method was bogus, there seems to be some indication that it works. Has anyone used it? Of course, if we got pg on it it would be okay (am taking prenatals etc.) but I would prefer not to worry each month. At the same time, condoms seem so unappealing to me. any thoughts?

Yes. Resulted in one pregnancy, thankfully after we were married.

However, I went a while using the withdrawl method without getting pregnant and wasn't aware how long sperm can live inside you...so I'm pretty shocked one didn't slip past the goalie before I got married.

15:03 again and I just re-read your post. A word of advice--the withdrawl method will NOT work unless your periods are very regular. The withdrawl method will always leave you suseptable to trace amounts of sperm, through pre-cum, accidents, whatever. So when we used that method, I also used condoms when I was ovulating, or when it was the middle of my cycle. (Of course, sperm can live longer than I originally thought, hence the pregnancy in my case.)

No, it doesn't work. I've gotten pregnant from this technique. Use a condom.

We've been using this method for BC for 10 years without any pregnancies.

thanks for the input....i know it doesn't work if you have sex multiple times or forget to pull out. I guess my one concern is that I really have no idea when I am ovulating because I am just coming off the pill.

We use the pull out method during the times that I can get pregnant based on the rhythm method and we've managed to not get pregnant in the 3 years between pregnancies. We are fertile as gotten pregnant on the first try both times. (The second pregnancy ended in a MC so TTC again) Since we only want 2 kids I don't think I will rely on this after the second child. Since you are only trying to delay pregnancy a couple of months and are okay if one slipped through I would go ahead and risk it.

Have you considered a diaphragm? I used one for two or three months before I was ready to get pregnant, after going off the pill, and got pregnant the very first month I stopped using the diaphragm.

don't you have to get fitted for one? I guess I could go in to the doc. It just seems like a lot of effort for just a few months. Then again, I am concerned that if we were to get pg right now it wouldn't be good for the baby because i am drinking coffee and am not careful (will have a glass of wine or two)...so i feel like i am being reckless.

another unrelated question is we had sex unprotected (no withdrawal) the day i would have started a new pack (i got my days mixed up) after finishing my period. there is absolutely zero chance we could get pg from that, right?

We used it for 5 years effectively..Here are some stats.

* Of every 100 women whose partners use withdrawal, 4 will become pregnant each year if they always do it correctly.
* Of every 100 women whose partners use withdrawal, 27 will become pregnant each year if they don't always do it correctly.
