Why do my jeans discolor when I wash them?

Every pair I own has these horitzontal "fade" lines on the front between the waist and the crotch. I wash them in cold water, inside out and don't put them in the dryer. It seems indiscriminate to brand - has happened to Joe's, Loft, Old Navy. I just bought a new pair of dark wash jeans from Banana republic - washed them twice to make sure they were ready to be hemmed and they are streaked all over! They look terrible. I am going to try and return them.

What am I doing wrong? The sales lady at Denim Bar told me not to dry clean jeans - she said to wash them inside out and air dry them.

This is making me crazy.
