I generally hate carpet but we are buying a house and the basement is currently fully carpeted. We are debating whether we should remove the carpeting and put in wood flooring, or just swap out the carpet for something new. The space will mainly be a playroom for my kids, so maybe there is some value to carpet vs. hard floor?
What do others have, and what would your preference be? |
| If I were in your position I'd leave the carpeting and just get it deep (steam) cleaned before you move in. You can put a rug on top of it if it's ugly. |

If the basement is fairly clean and dry at the moment, I'd leave it for the time being but put it on the list to be replaced down the road. All basements are eventually somewhat damp and carpet inevitably gets worse (allergenic, musty, moldy) in a subgrade situation. See how the carpet is doing a year from now after the summer humidity and late summer/fall rains and then make a decision.
When and if you replace it, use LVP (luxury vinyl plank) that looks like wood. Hardwood will not stand up to the damp and will be expensive. LVP is cushioned and insulated as well as waterproof, great for a playroom, and much cheaper than other options. You can read up on it and order some samples; this is emphatically not the vinyl flooring of old. |
+1 It's great not to have to worry too much about moisture in a basement. And if it's just a playroom, no point in wasting money putting in nice hardwood that might get wet. |
| I wouldn’t do anything until you have to but when you do, tile or vinyl or linoleum. |
| I love having carpet in the basement. It makes it so much cozier than a cold basement floor, and uncarpeted rooms are so noisy too. |

I was going to say the same thing. We put LVP in a bathroom and I love the stuff. Right now we have old cheap vinyl tile in the basement, but when we get around to replacing it, it's definitely going to be LVP with the cushion underneath for the added insulation. |
| LVP with rugs is the way to go for a basement playroom. |
|
Lvp plus area rugs!
But in your case I’d leave the carpet until it’s dirty |
| LVP and area rugs - wood isn't going to be a good choice for below-grade installation. |
It all depends on your preferences. If you don't like carpets, then it's better to remove them from your home and not worry about this reason. I agree with your opinion about the carpets. Until recently, I always had carpets at home, I liked them. But then there was one incident, after which I removed all the carpets. I accidentally dropped an iron on one of the carpets, and I had a small house fire, which I put out myself. After that, I decided that I would give the carpet that was burned to the carpet repair agency and then to my aunt. Afterwards, I gave her all the carpets
