We have an 8 year old cat that recently was treated for a UTI. Now she won't go back to peeing in the litter box (negative association with pain?), and pees right outside of it. Any advice to get her to start using it again? It's getting ridiculous at this point but I don't know how to train her to go back in it to pee. Any advice ?

Poor thing! First, are you certain she's over the infection? Second, have you tried a second litter box right next to the first one with a different litter? Try something really really soft on the paws. I like the PPs suggestion of puppy pee pads under both boxes and spread out a foot or two until you get the situation under control. That will save you a lot of cleaning heartache, and they're a cheap stopgap measure. "Oh, kitty missed the box. Gotta switch the pad" instead of "Oh, kitty missed the box, where's the paper towels and the two weeks' soaking with Nature's Miracle?"
If necessary, try a litterbox in a completely different place, again with really soft litter. |
Thanks for the suggestions. Yes, she's over the UTI. We are using the pee pads....they do work unless she decides to scratch at them and move them and the pee goes underneath (AAHH!). I have put a new shallow litter box in her area and she will most of the time use that, but she had been using one of those deep litter boxes that she has to climb into that makes SO MUCH less mess and I would love to transition her back to that kind. I will also try moving it to a completely different location. Thanks again. |
How's this going, OP? |
