Expectant and Postpartum Moms
Related to the length of labor thread, is there any relationship between whether your mom/sister(s) went into labor early or late and how likely you are to go early or late? Or no relationship at all?
Don't know the stats but it wasn't true for me. Sisters & mom late, I was on time for 1st and early for 2nd.

I don't think it's always predictive because there can be so many variables, but yes, I do think there can be similarities. My labor was very similar to my mother's (both in duration, and because we both went into labor 3 days after due date). On the other hand, my sister's was very different -- 11 days early, rapid dilation and birth - so clearly something was going on where her body wanted the baby out.
I have a friend whose mother and grandmother both had their water break followed by fast labors, and so she planned for the same. Her water did break, but her labor wasn't unusually fast. Good luck! |
The nurse at our hospital class said there is absolutely no correlation with timing of labor and genetics (ie, if you were born early, there is no reason to believe that you will go into labor early). On the other hand, she said that if your mother had an easy/hard labor, that may be a predictor of how easy/hard your first labor will be as genetics can lend a hand in how well your body wil physically react to labor/delivery.
no- everyone in my family was late and I was four weeks early.
None. My mom was late with my brother and had to be induced with me. I, on the other hand, delivered a week early. One similarity is that neither of us had particularly difficult labors. Not sure if that's due to genetics or just coindicence.
Not for me. My mother had two scheduled c-sections because sibling and I were breech. My DC was an easy vaginal birth, average length of labor.
For those who found their labors were like their female relatives, are you built like them? I'm built more like the women in my Dad's family, so I'm guessing if my body behaves like anyone, it will be them? Does that ring true with folks' experience?
I posted in the other thread, but found that my labor took after my Dad's side of the family - which made sense to me as that is the side I more physically resemble. Not the timing of delivery - I actually don't know when those relatives delivered in relation to their due dates - but in terms of the speed of delivery. And it turned out the pregnancies had similarities as well, i.e. my Dad's sister and her daughter both had lots of Braxton Hicks and quick labors, which was my experience as well. |
Nope.
