With my first two, I had a normal appetite, but pretty awful morning sickness/vomiting. This time, I have no appetite at all. All food always sounds disgusting. I can't stand the thought of even basic, bland foods. I have only puked a couple times (way less often than my previous pregnancies) but I'm also eating maybe 1000 calories a day, and that's really forcing myself. I've lost 8 lbs and I'm 9 weeks. Has anyone had this experience? Any advice?
Yep I was exactly the same. My doc said for the first 3 months, baby is getting enough nutrients from prenatal and whatever you eat, so just eat whatever comfort foods can make you happy even if not so healthy (mine was cereal). Then hopefully it subsides by 2nd trimester and you get back into better eating. For me, it subsided except for two key foods: fish and avocado. I couldn’t eat those until just recently at 34 weeks. Good luck!
It's fine. The first 13 weeks are anyone's game. I ate jolly ranchers, penne noodles, and McDonald's lemonade. Or, I simply didn't eat.
This was my pregnancy experience, only with more barfing. I would find something I could eat (cereal! or maybe this week it's cooked pasta!) and stock up on it, only for the thought of it to disgust me within 36 hours. You've just got to power through.
Thanks for the replies. Unfortunately, not even carbstastic foods are appealing. With my previous kids, plain crackers and rice were great, but this time, literally all foods disgust me. As of this morning I'm down 10 lbs. But I will just white knuckle through the next few weeks and trust 2nd tri will be better.
I asked my husband to make me high calorie foods with no taste during both of my first trimesters. I ate a lot of very thin quesadillas.
I had food aversions (to things I had loved!) and lack of appetite. It got better into the 2nd and 3rd trimesters. Doc just said to eat what I could tolerate.I put the hurt on yogurt and pudding for about 25 weeks.
definitely experienced this several times. can you afford to lose some weight? if so I wouldn't worry. with my first I was already low end of healthy bmi and still lost 10 pounds. gained total 25 during the pregnancy which was very healthy. I would do milkshakes and smoothies and try to add some nutrition in - ie a banana, or some avocado, or some almond butter. but I always gained my apetite back by 12-15 weeks.
I was like this with both my pregnancies. I never vomited, but trying to eat anything was close to impossible. I would wake up in the middle of the night from hunger pangs and force down some dry toast. I'd also go for the most calorie dense foods, like peanut butter, so that I'd only have to do a spoonful, and whenever I stumbled upon a craving, I latched onto it immediately and would eat lunch at 9:30 or 10AM.
you could also try to sip on those cold presses juices for a little nutrition. but I agree with previous posters that I wouldn't worry about nutrition - your baby will be fine and your apetite will return.

That was me! I lost about 5 pounds in the first trimester. Started gaining during second and now at 25 weeks I am 4 pounds over over my pre-pregnancy weight. (I gained a total of 9 pounds since). I thought this wasn’t enough but at my ultrasounds the baby was thankfully the right size, growth-wise.
Baby doesn’t need a ton of extra calories in the first trimester, so don’t stress! |
Unisom and B6 helped me gain my appetite back. For me it was the empty stomach that made me nauseous
I had that feeling my whole pregnancy. I ended up 20 pounds under my pre pregnancy weight at birth. My doctors were concerned and thought I just refused to eat but the truth was I never felt sicker. I wanted to eat but anything made it worse. Baby was a normal size.
