Newby Question - how to they determine tournament flights?

Anonymous
How does a team or league determine the flights? Same for league play - how do they figure out what the right level is for a particular team?

TIA!

I cant say I know for certain but I would think the league the teams play in, placement in their league and gotsoccer rankings for tournament flight placement.

past results, team requests and, especially for younger teams, club reputation

When a team/club registers for a tournament they request a level of play meaning they self identify as to what level/bracket they want to play. That alone does not dictate where they end up. From there the host club will consider that along with what they already know about the the club/team, ranking, prior history and attempt to place them in a competitive bracket. Problems are bound to arise. Some coaches opt for lesser brackets to get easy tournament wins and pad their team ranking plus their own personal sense of accomplishment. Other clubs will shoot high to play against top tier talent to help with their development.

Combination of YouthSoccerRankings.com, GotSoccer Points and League records. After those, if trying to make a split decision, previous tournaments at said tournament OR hosting club team will take higher bracket.

Tournaments have to do it's best to make things competitive so teams return the following year.

The latter is what our coach did.

But there's a difference between "challenge" and "blown off the field."

it's hard to tell. DD's team has easily won brackets and then gotten destroyed in finals before and other times they've barley gotten out of brackets and won finals walking away. For whatever reason, it seems like they are constantly running into tournaments with lopsided brackets

We have to submit a form that has the teams you beat that would suggest you belong in the top or near the top tier. Also, youthsoccerrankings.us helps this as they have all the games to prove your wins or ties against other highly ranked clubs. Past tournament performance over the current year helps. From there, what the tourney directors do is up to that specific tournament, but generally they give weight to traveling clubs coming from farther away so they get their money's worth.
