Sports for nonagressive girls

Anonymous
My ds plays soccer and is very successful due to his natural speed an aggressiveness.

My dd 5 is the opposite. She enjoys dance and the arts (which we do).Because she is so young, I am trying to introduce her to a sport she may like to keep her active (I'm having trouble keeping her active over the years and it's showing).

Any ideas for a sport we can try that burns calories/ stays moving for nonagressive or non fast girls? We have tried tennis clinics a couple times. She did not like them but can always revisit as she gets older.

Im looking for long term ideas, even if they are closed now. Thanks.

Track when she’s older
Gymnastics

Try everything she might be interested and maybe something will stick.

My DD loved gymnastics at that age, liked running/track, and now is into horseback riding. She also enjoys ice skating, which her cousins have done competitively although I haven't looked into that in the DMV area.

All sports require aggression to compete and win.

I don’t think that’s true. In order to compete and win you need to be competitive, at least against yourself. I am not an aggressive person, at all. I feel badly for my opponents when I am beating them, and wish I could make them feel better afterwards. I was an average swimmer in high school and a national level rower in high school and college. I was driven by the desire to win, but crew worked better for me than swimming because I was motivated to work harder for my team.

Dance sounds great, OP. How about climbing or swimming?

Ditto equestrian and gymnastics.

But with a teen daughter who lives and breathes ballet at an elite level, don't rule out dance as a substitute for sports. As much as I value the lessons sports provide, like grit and teamwork and balance, they aren't for everyone. We tried SO many sports and my daughter just didn't take to any of them, and I learned to let it go.

OP, if she likes dance, you could look into aerial arts. There are a number of children’s programs in the DMV (including summer camps). It’s also a great way to introduce the value of upper body strength.

My non aggressive DD (age 11) plays softball (just rec league)

She really likes it. I’m sure club teams are totally different, but rec teams are just for fun. Really nice team sport with a great group of girls.

So maybe tball in the spring? Tball tends to be mixed boys and girls, and might be fun to try.

Ice skating. It’s a great sport with the potential for life long enjoyment, and easy to enjoy progress without competition — unless she wants that at some point.
