Nanny Holiday Bonus - Ordinary and Customary?

Anonymous
Hi. We are entering the holidays for the first time with a nanny. We live on Capitol Hill. What is the standard bonus for nannies in this area? Thanks!

1-2 weeks gross pay in cash.

We do 1 week.

I'm debating it this year. We paid our nanny for 3 months while she didn't work and we paid for backup care during that time.

A week's pay. We are adding to that this year though, since the kids have been doing online school and DH and I have been working from home since March.

We always did $500. It's a good round number.

This year I paid for 4 months of not coming to work and I don't know what to do at Christmas.

This year, I’d do 2 weeks. It’s hard as H to entrain kids during Covid.

Our nanny was hired in December and we wrote a $2,500 bonus for good work at the year mark in her contract. Nanny is extraordinary so we upped it to $3,500 (more that two weeks salary). This was DH’s idea as it’s what done in his business.

For Christmas and her birthday we give her gifts (new sweater, framed photo of her with our child, new backpack).

Generally one or two weeks pay.

But look, if you’re struggling this year because of covid, your nanny will understand and maybe give her an additional week or two off or other perks. Just be upfront with her and honest.

Two weeks pay for a great nanny. If you give her a one week bonus she’ll think she did not perform well.

I’m curious about this too. My nanny worked significantly less (probably 50%) than she would in a normal year and we paid her her full pay anyways. Do you think she’s expecting a bonus? I feel like that was the bonus...

Did she request the 50% time off or did you tell her not to come?

You guys considering ditching the annual bonus are headed down a path of disappointment and resentment. A truly foolish economy.

100% this.

Your nanny is counting on a bonus unless you set expectations a long time ago. Don't screw this up!

Nanny here-

I’ll be super sad and disappointed if I don’t receive a good bonus this year. I’ve been working all through the pandemic and took on A LOT of extra work now that the housekeeper doesn’t come anymore. Now I’m a chef for the parents and the kids, do all the laundry, clean kitchen dishes constantly etc. I work really hard and spend hours researching recipes now that apparently it’s my job to feed the parents. If I don’t get a bonus, then I’ll be making tacos and pasta from now on. I’m not spending hours chopping onions and marinating and making sauces if my effort isn’t recognized. I took on a lot of extra unpaid work and I won’t continue doing it if I don’t receive a bonus.

Nanny again- I won’t cut back on anything extra I’m doing for the kids (I’m also doing alllll the distance learning) but I will cut back on the things I do just for the parents. If I’m not getting paid extra or given a bonus, I’m done folding your underpants!
