Anne Arundel County Public Schools stopping in person sports and activities

This is being done in consultation with the Health Department after the case rate in the county has risen substantially. On September 25, the county had 9.22 cases per 100,000 (7 day average). Today the county has 22.9 cases per 100,000 (7 day average). Seven day average positivity yesterday was 5.46%. This is not due to public schools reopening, but due to community spread.

I wonder when/if the AACo privates will close. And does this effect the non-school sports that use school athletics fields, or are they organized with park and rec?

So far, no change with non-public school sports. It wouldn't surprise me to see the AACo privates shift to virtual due to the high case and positivity rate.

I hope not! Travel soccer has not been canceled even though school sports have been canceled. I hope the same logic transfers to private schools being open even though public schools remain closed. The private schools do not have any outbreaks. It seems over bearing to close something which is doing well with safety mitigations.

Our private school in Annapolis will not close unless they are ordered to close by the State and the County. And knowing the Pittman / Dr K dream team, I'm sure they will try.

All youth sports using any county facilities cancelled as of Monday morning.

I hate how so much of the burden of this is on kids. Why can't kids at least have practices at 25% capacity like the bars can?

I also read on Twitter that although this order does not apply to any private facilities or the private schools which are either playing or holding athletic practices, the county is considering whether further action targeting private athletics is also necessary.

Although my kids will be disappointed, I understand why the County Exec. feels the need to take action. There aren't any good choice. I do question, however, prohibiting outdoor activities on county field, while not addressing indoor. For instance, my daughter's soccer team had agreed that they won't play indoor soccer or futsal this winter to avoid additional indoor risk. They were going to try to continue to practice outdoors, and normally practice on county fields. So, with that option off the table, doesn't that push teams indoors, which is the opposite of what should be happening?

Soccer has been the saving grace for my kids, but we will have to figure out another way to adjust during the winter.
