Seriously??!!
I understand why, but since my child goes to half-day preschool that follow MoCo, she'll only be there for 90 minutes. We both need more than that! |
I wouldn't be surprised if they have delayed openings all week. Not sure why, but they are hypersensitive around here. |
I hadnt heard this, but i imagine it has to do with traffic on the roads....by deLAYING school openings, perhaps they think it will be two waves of traffic??? now off to check my county... |
does your child wait for the bus outside? do they walk to school? I guess not! some places were not well plowed yet and there is no way to wait for the bus on the street. some children WALK to school and there's no way to safely walk around yet. I had several friends telling me they fell on the street and I can't even walk to the grocery store like I used to do every week. I'm pregnant and scared to death to fall with a couple bags on my hands. I drove to school today and people could barely see the bus coming standing in the regular bus stop. they're better hurry up with this cleaning... if you're a pedestrian life is just miserable right now. UGH! |
Yes, the roads are still pretty bad where I teach - Fairfax County. I think we will have delays all week - no way they can have kids waiting for the bus in the dark like they do on a normal start time day. |
Kids walk to school in the snow in other cities. Any city where it snows a lot has big piles of snow afterwards. I hate to say it, but the piles of snow from the plowing are going to be here for a while. You can't just keep calling off and delaying school until everything melts and conditions are "perfect" in every single neighborhood. |
When I was out this morning tThe paved areas were a complete sheet of ice this morning from minor melting yesterday. I imagine it will be worse tomorrow after the weather now. |
I think one of the problems with calling off school here is that the counties are so huge and there is such a wide area that needs to be cleaned up after every storm. In NH, where I am from, they call off schools by town, so there is a much smaller area to plow and if schools are called off in one place it affects many fewer students than closing an entire county. Is it common for school districts to be so large in other parts of the country? |
When our county is 2 hrs late, they cancel the morning preschool program altogether. I'll take 90 mins over nothing any day! |
There is going to be melting an refreeze for weeks -- are you proposing to have delayed openings until the snow is gone? |
I read that the reasoning to delay school was to let the majority of traffic be off the roads before the children were using compromised bus stops and sidewalks. This makes sense to me, especially the first day back. |
18:25 here...below is copied from Jack Dale's message on www.fcps.edu. "Barring any significant additional snow accumulations, we do anticipate opening on Tuesday, February 16, with a two-hour delay to ensure that rush hour traffic has subsided and our children can walk more safely to their bus stops or to school. However, we will continue to need your assistance when school re-opens to ensure that our students remain safe. I hope that parents will get together in each neighborhood to make sure students have a safe walk to their bus stop. Because of limitations to parking and kiss and ride lanes, I encourage parents who transport their children to school to carpool over the next few days as mounds of snow have limited the drop-off areas at many schools." |
People in those places ARE USED TO THIS AMOUNT OF SNOW! We don't know how to walk in such amount of snow, we don't know how to drive during this weather. Our children will be all safer if they stay at home. DC area was not prepared for this amount of snow so THIS IS AN EXCEPTION. Do you have children walking to school? I don't think so! I'm a pedestrian and a driver in this area and I don't know what's worse. Being in my car and driving watching for irresponsible drivers and witnessing pedestrians falling or being a pedestrian myself and being splashed in every corner while I walk and having to struggle to walk between ice, water, salt and mountains of snow. Nobody will get hurt from being at home for a couple more days or staying home a couple more hours, meaning leaving for school later. |
We are in Fairfax County which also has a delayed opening tomorrow. Our preschool normally follows the county school schedule, but they have changed that policy given the amount of school we've missed this season. My son had preschool today and they plan to open on time tomorrow. Maybe you can talk to your director about making some policy modifications given the extraordinary circumstances. |
PG County schools are CLOSED!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
