Tournament Ringers

How common is it for coach's to roster a "ringer" for a tournament? I'm talking about a GOAT who maybe plays for another league, maybe another age-group, coming in for a tournament with zero practices with the team ahead of time. Just shows up on the roster 2 days before the tournament-- no conversation at all with the players or the parents.

That depends. We used to be at a team that does not have enough players and always lose even in the lowest division. We play better soccer (rather than losing ball all the time) when top team players join us as guests and everyone is happy. And our coach do not give them extra minutes and normally they came off bench.

I have been at my club 5 years- it is one of the big name local clubs. Coaches have never done that on our teams.

In fact the opposite where we bring up a player from the lower team due to an injury or if that player is showing readiness to ensure we have coverage.

oh yeah. My DD was THAT girl. Playing for other clubs (she was ECNL then DA) and played for CCL etc. For example - she played for FCV but then went to tourny's for Herndon, Arlington, and many other FCV teams.

My son's team guest plays players from other clubs all the time. That's how we ended up there. My son was asked to guest play and he ended up liking the team and we joined at the end of the year. To this day we still guest play kids that may be interested in joining the team. And yes, only kids that improve the team are asked to guest play (maybe not "ringers" but good players for sure.). There is good and bad. The good is that ... it puts a little pressure on the kids that their game time isn't secure in tournaments and they need to work hard. It's bad because...well the guest player is taking time away from a rostered kid. All the parents and players seem to accept it. As to notifying the parents...the parents and players are reminded/forewarned that their may be guest players 2-3 weeks before the tournament.

You spiced it up and made it sound great but this is the same situation as OP and it sucks. Even for the opponent who is looking for a fair game.

+1.

Same.. in another big name club and we never do this. My ds did play up once when they did not have enough players for a tournament, but he played up and therefore was not a "ringer" as he was a year younger and was not a better player than the regular players.

It happens and it is CREEPY when the coach does not communicate it to parents and players. The guest player shows up in the tournament and ends up more time than other players. What a heck is in the coach brain? It is disrespectful to the whole team and families.

DD is the keeper for the top team at her club- she guests down for tournaments when there are no conflicts. A couple of other players usually volunteer to fill out the roster

I would bet that you're a Loudoun parent, right?

Should the aggrieved family sue the club for emotional and economic damage?

Do people realize that not all clubs have enough kids to fill out rosters at all levels? There are likely 'ringers' in every game those teams play

In the age of snowflakery, equity, cancel culture and colored emos claiming there are thousands of genders id say go for it. You’ll win the suit.
