Expecting girl twins at the end of the month. Very excited! Trying to nail down names. I really want to name one Sarah going by Sadie and the other Caroline. Is it weird for one to have and go by a nickname and one not to? I hate the names Carrie and Carly so those are not an option for Caroline. I love Sadie and have always wanted to name my daughter that (which is why I am not going with just Sarah no nickname) but I also recognize that Sadie is slightly cutesy, if you will, and want to give her the option of using something more formal if she chooses as she gets older. Also both Sarah and Sadie are very meaningful to our family. (Caroline is too, for that matter.)
Am I over thinking it? |
| You are overthinking this. Congrats! |
| Just name them Sadie and Caroline. For what it’s worth I have no idea where you got the idea that Sadie is cutesy. It is not cutesy in any sense of the word. It can be used as a standalone name though. |

Congrats! Our daughter’s nickname is different from her given name, and it can be a real pain especially, like Sarah nn Sadie, both her names are recognized as given names in their own right (unlike nicknaming a kid Peanut or something). I don’t think it’s weird for one to have the nn and not the other, just know that the “going by a nickname” can have drawbacks.
Can Sadie be her first name and Sarah her middle? |
| I think you’re overthinking it too. Go for it, OP! And congrats! |
Sadie is a nickname for Sarah. What you propose is like naming a kid Tommy Thomas. I think OP’s choices are lovely. We don’t have any twins but I have 2 who always use their whole name and one who uses a nickname. It’s fine. |
| Just name her Sadie. |
|
It's fine. My cousin has twin girls. One goes by a nickname (Therese -> Tess) and the other goes by her full name. No issues at all.
I love Sarah and Caroline together (one of my daughters is named Sarah), and I adore Sadie as a nickname for Sarah. My mother is also named Sarah, and my grandmother used to call her Sadie. Sadie very clearly reads as a nickname to me, so I wouldn't use it as a standalone. |

Yes I'd just use Sadie, personally. I know 3 and all have that as their given name.
I know one little Caroline and she goes by CC. |
| Why does Sarah need a nickname? Especially one exactly the same length as the actual name? Sarah is prettier, just go with Sarah and call her Sarah. If you want to call her Sadie, name her Sadie. |
| My friend is an identical twin. She goes, and has always gone, by a nickname for her legal name and her sister does not (no options for nicknames for her sister's name). Seems normal to me, they don't have to match. |
| Name Sadie, Sadie and give her a strong middle name she can use if she would rather. |
Yep, this right here. |
| Name her what you want to call her. There is nothing controversial about the name Sadie. I have one of these nicknames used as my name, and frankly I would rather my nickname have been my name. When you get older and have to use your real name professionally, you don’t know what to introduce yourself as. Or you just kind of lose one. |
| Cara could be a nice for Caroline. Do you like that better? |
