Daughter’s short menstrual cycles

Anonymous
My 13 year old daughter has very short menstrual cycles. This is a new development since early summer. Cycles are ranging between 17-21 days. Anyone else experience this with their teen daughter?

Irregular cycle is common in young women but you could check with her pcp and see if a visit to an endocrinologist, or at least some blood work, makes sense.

Yep. Mine is below 5% BMI and had a really heavy period lasting 8-9 days every 20 days or so. So, about half the time. She was also 14.5 when she started her period. Again— low BMI.

I took her to a great gyn for young teens and had some bloodwork run (no internal exam necessary since she wasn’t sexually active). Anemic (duh). And didn’t have the fat stores to make enough estrogen. A low dose BCP for teens has made her life so much better. She has also put on a little bit of weight with the BCPs. Which makes her feel better— she was pretty self counscious about having no curves and being so thin. And, we are hoping she’ll be able to make enough estrogen come off the BCPs soon.

My 13 yo daughter started her periods in March and is having the same issue. Was about to make a doctor appointment for her. Anemia makes sense as she is vegetarian. She is also very skinny but is starting to fill out in puberty.
