anyone love their bunkbeds?

This will be 2 of my sons' Xmas gift from Santa. They are 8 and 6. I don't want to spend a fortune, but I still want something sturdy. I have a younger son, too, who will likely use the bed with my 6 year old once the 8 year old is out of it.

I bought the pottery barn Hayes bunk beds on sale. It wasn’t exactly my taste, but it is rock solid and not too close to the ceiling (easier to change sheets, but still a challenge). My girls are 5 and 7.5. They’ve been using them for about 9 months.

We have a twin over full bunk bed from Costco that's been in use for 7 years and doing great.

I have eight year old twins; they have been sleeping in the basic Ikea wood bunkbeds for about four years now (natural color). It's pretty sturdy and easy to put together or take apart (we have moved a bunch).

I bought pottery barn bc everything was sold out when i got ours. A little more than i wanted to spend but supurb quality. You can get the same styles from value city furniture for less which may work for 2 boys.

We ordered my DS’s bunk bed on wayfair- was not terribly expensive. it’s a bunk bed with a trundle and has served him well for the last year or so, no complaints

I have one from Room and Board and regret it. The bunk bed itself is of extremely high quality and looks like new 7 years later, however, it is a twin over full (my thought at the time was to use the full part for guests 1x or 2x per year as we lived in a condo and there was not guest bedroom). Also, for my child to have sleepovers, etc (there is a great trundle underneath).

That said, the bed I chose has the two beds (twin and full) fully connected and I can't dismantle them to have two separated bed. Now, 7 years later, I live in a SFH with plenty of room and 2 guests bedrooms and my child doesn't want a bunker anymore. I feel bad getting rid of it because it is such a high quality piece of furniture and it was expensive.

For now I put it on my youngest's bedroom and put another full size bed in my oldest... it should last us another 3 or 4 years before the youngest outgrow it too.

Rambling aside, my point is to suggest you think ahead and if you decide for a bunker bed get one that is a) cheap (it doesn't need to be great quality since kids outgrow these things - unless you need the space like I did when living in a condo) OR;

B) get one that can be turned into two separate bed.

We bought nice bunk beds from a store that is now out of business. They are sturdy but I HATE them. Sheets are impossible to change on the top due to my height and the built in guard rails. The simplest way to get the fitted sheet on is to take the mattress down from the top but I can’t do it again due to my height. For almost ten years I made my husband change it. I was so happy when my older son was big enough to take over. I would love to unbunk their beds but my kids share a smallish room so it’s not an option. Whatever you buy, make sure you can unbunk later if you find it too cumbersome to change the sheets.

I purchased a used set on CL that had the ladder attached to bed (very important) and it had a trundle underneath that we used for storage. For $100. My daughter used it for 3 years - loved it. Sturdy. Started to outgrow the top bunk by 11 and we just sold it a few months ago for $200 on Facebook yard sale group. So we earned $100 on it.

I would never buy them brand new. So many on FB and CL.
