I understand pandemic is making it difficult for local stores, and one would be foolhardy to open a bookstore during these uncertain times. I want to spend my $$ locally however, and there's no place to do that in MoCo. I am ordering from DC independents instead of Amazon or B&N despite the price difference. MoCo has such a highly educated populace with disposable income who say they want to support local business and buy locally - why can't an independent bookstore make it work here? There's plenty of space - Pike N Rose gets plenty of foot traffic and there's no good bookstores around there. The closest we have is Politics and Prose - and it's not even in Maryland. I don't blame people for not wanting to fight the Amazons and B&N of the world, but I don't like it. |
There is Second Story books for used. It is great. |
Loyalty Books is in Silver Spring. I did a quick search and found a listing of best ones in MD and looks like there are two each in SS, Rockville, and Kensington. Are you complaining that there are none in your random neighborhood? |
Blame your fellow DCUM’ers. I read how many use Amazon regularly because they’re too busy to shop in a real store, well...that won’t happen without consequence. You can have a bookstore if you don’t have shoppers. Thank you for supporting bookstore when you can, OP. |
Loyalty Books is in Montgomery County. Look them up! They’re great! |
I don't want a used bookstore - I have ordered from Loyalty Books and I like them. What are the others in Rockville and Kensington that are NOT used bookstores, but, rather independent bookstores like Loyalty or P&P? |
For the last decade, most people opted to purchase everything online to get the cheapest price or for convenience. As a consequence, we don’t have cool brick and mortar storefronts like bookstores.
I was a holdout because I always have and always will prefer independently owned stores. I hate the fact that every community in America has the same chains; every town looks the same. And thanks to the pandemic which is driving even the holdouts out of business, I’m convinced the only brick and mortar businesses that will be left standing are chains, nail salons, Chinese takeout, tattoo parlors and vape shops. Way to go, all you people who opted to buy the cheapest stuff online! Now we’ll all suffer the consequences of soulless strip malls with the same Panera, chipotle, nail salon, dry cleaners, etc. |
We've had them and they cost more so no one shopped at them. Hence they closed. |
Go to Loyalty Books. DTSS, Black-owned, queer-owned, and super friendly! |
The biggest and perhaps most famous independent bookstore in nyc is in desperate financial shape.
Book stores can’t sustain themselves when people just use bookstores as a hangout for free WiFi and coffee. |

Ashton, MD (that’s MoCo, near Silver Spring and Olney) |
I love Loyalty books in DTSS. I did a big order from them near the start of the lock down.....it is probably time to do another. I miss going there to shop. |
I found 3 independent bookstores near me in Gaithersburg in 2.5 seconds.
What’s the problem? |
Great bookstore! Maybe not what OP envisioned. |
This. MoCo also has many used book stores. |
