No school on Nov 4th and 5th?

Anonymous
We received this long email from the chancellor yesterday and part of it says:

"We recognize that mid-year transitions are challenging, and we believe this shift to offer some in-person learning in Term 2 will allow us to provide critical supports to students who need it most. As we prepare for these changes, there will be a modification to the academic calendar for elementary students. On November 4 and 5, grades PK3 to 5 will have asynchronous instruction so elementary staff can have two additional Professional Development days. Friday, November 6, remains a day off for students and a split records-PD day for all staff. "

Does that means there is no school on Nov 4th and 5th on top of Nov 3 (election day) and Nov 6 (PD) for grade PK3 to 5?

I am so confused by this.

TIA

Yes, there is only school on Nov. 2nd that week.

They will not make up those days since asynchronous days count...

There is no school live with a teacher. But students will have all asynchronous learning. Not ideal. But teachers’ whole worlds are changing on November 9 and this is the district’s way of balancing providing them with PD and planning time while also not completely having kids disconnect for several day.

Yeah, in person teachers will need the time to develop in person plans. But, more importantly, virtual teachers will need additional time to try and figure out how they are now going to manage a virtual class of 35 kids.

Teachers need time to plan for this shift. Not ideal, but it makes sense.

No. It means that they are off Nov. 3rd. They work online with no Zoom classes on the 4th and 5th. They are off on the 6th. So basically no live instruction that week with 2 days off for students and 1 day off for staff.

Correction. Monday is the only day of live instruction. The rest of the week students are either off or working online.

Is this just for ES students or all students since the plan calls for moving some adults from MS/HS to ES?

I really wish they would be clearer on these very basic pieces of info. Why do people have to wonder if their kid is going to school on a particular day? They certainly know how to send the naughty email when mine doesn’t log in to Canvas on Wednesdays. Irritating.

It says PK3 to 5.

PP what else isn’t clear? I’m no DCPS apologist but the message seemed perfectly clear to me. Nov. 4 and 5 were previously school days and now are not.

The email wasn't clear. A school is going to have which staff in if a school goes Pre K - 8 - that is not clear.

I hope that individual schools send that information out.
