Teacher told kids on zoom class to write about their white privilege

Anonymous
Teacher is Muslim, the class is very small and is a mix of white and non -white. She pointed out the kids who were non -white by name and stated that they must know how it feels to be bullied just like she does. She told the kids to write about their privileges and the kids were confused. She said write down that you are white and European looking and not transgender. Is this appropriate? 5th grade.

Unless you hear if all from the teacher's mouth, take it with a grain of salt until you know more.

This is why I am close by in zoom. Eye opening what you hear our kids being taught.

I mean of course it is not appropriate, if that is truly what happened. I would be furious and I am not "white". Again, I would vet the information first and foremost. If it is true I would go directly to head of school and cc teacher.

Appropriate to high schoolers.

I’m confused about the transgender thing.

I don’t think it’s wrong to ask students to examine their white privilege. I’d probably approach it as “this is privilege...some of us have more of it. All of us have probably experienced bullying or hard things, and we should knowledge that some of this can due to our race. Take 20 minutes to make a list of privileges you have due to your race, or hardships/barriers you have faced because of your race.” Should be ungraded.

I am not white and by 5th grade, i very much understood the difference between me and everyone else. while i don't know if her delivery was great, i think it's reasonable that a white child can think of the advantages he/her has vs a non white child.

Not appropriate period. It’s another form of racism. Apparently ok to be racist along as it’s against white people. Disgusting

Uh huh. She said this verbatim?

It’s really not. She put the kids in boxes without really knowing their true identities. Instead, she should’ve asked them to engage in some self-examination and write about how they are privileged and how they are not.

And what about the advantages a black person has? Let’s talk about that about that. And when did it become OK to stereotype people?

It is weird to tell non white kids that they must have been bullied, but I don't see anything wrong with asking 5th graders to identify their white privilege.

That makes it sound like only white people are privileged and they have nothing but privilege. Really short-sighted and wrong.

What school is this?

Ok let’s talk about black privilege. It’s a thing it exists. Talking about differences is healthy pegging o e group as less than or inherently racist, Ie white privilege is reckless and dangerous. Creating a whole generation of white self loathing kids will only make everyone resentful and really racist in the long run.
