Moving MS/HS teachers and staff to teach CARES elementary classrooms

Anonymous
Good thing there are no middle and high schoolers in the city who need teaching....

I don't think this is a good thing, but the article is pretty clear that they're moving non-instructional staff, not teachers.

The article headline is MS/HS staff, no mention of teachers. I'm ok with this, our MS teachers are doing the best job they can. Reassigning non-teaching staff seems like a good plan.

It is because central office staff freaked out last week when they were told they would have to staff Cares classrooms. Bowser and Ferebee have no clue what they are doing.

To call these positions “non-teaching staff” is a misrepresentation. Assistant Principals and counselors are very much needed at MS and HS in distanced learning mode.

That is not true. DCPS raised the class cap to 40. They are going to movie teachers, see info from Duke Ellington. 10 of them are moving. If you think MS\HS can open when this happens you are DREAMING. This is an absolute disaster. They should wait until Jan 1 and get a good solid plan in place - not this mess.

Assistant Principals and counselors are absolutely needed, but they aren't teaching staff. Calling them teachers was a misrepresentation. Calling the "non-teaching" is accurate.

Not that I think this is necessarily an appropriate staffing solution, but the only personnel from MS and HS that I can think of who are not needed in distance learning mode are the cafeteria staff and the security guards.

at-risk kids can’t wait 2 more months. lay the blame where it belongs - wtu for delaying a rational opening in August.

"The chancellor does not need an agreement with the union to reopen school buildings, but an accord would make it more likely that teachers would be willing to return to classrooms."

Nice, he's such a clown. Why aren't we doing hybrid???

It doesn't say anywhere that they will be non-teaching staff. In fact, in the article, it says this:

The plan would take staff members — including assistant principals, secretaries and counselors — away from their work for middle and high schools and place them in non-teaching roles supervising children in elementary schools.

Note that the interpretation of what it means to be a staff member is Stein's...not wording from the policy. And the adendum says "including" not "limited to". As in, TEACHERS too...who are staff members.

Additionally, later in the article, it says:

Jackson said principals have been asked to select the staff members who will be dispatched to CARE classrooms.

So which is it, principals are picking or it's non-teaching staff? There are only so many secretaries and counselors per school

Duke Ellington claims that 10 of their teachers are being forced to move to Elementary schools. I don’t know what is going on but I am now thinking that the mayor and chancellor need to resign over this debacle. My HS kid and some of her friends could probably come up with a better plan than these two clowns.

Oh this is too funny. So MS/HS teachers, assistant principals, and principals who likely have no experience dealing with young kids will now be supervising them in the classroom.

What a disaster.
