A Reflux Question - TMI I guess...

Anonymous
I think I have reflux...
I won't stop burping, this has been going on for years, even when I have a completely empty stomach, for example as soon as I get up in the morning.
Whenever I eat a bit more than "just enough" I feel some sort of liquid coming back and forth in my mouth/throat. It doesn't seriously burn, or maybe I got used to it but it's very uncomfortable and it tastes/smells really bad!
It gets worse if I eat and lie down right away, things really come back like tiny chunks of food! When I burp it the worse!
DH noticed that my breath as a "distinct" smell. Nobody ever said that to me and I brush my teeth after every meal. He checked it out and he said: it's not your mouth that smells it's from your stomach! He's getting very concerned and wants me to go to the doctor. I've been living like this and nothing really bothered/hurt me to the point that I feel I need to go to the doctor but now that he mentioned the smell I'm feeling a bit conscious.
I never knew that grown ups can have reflux until this week when I saw a commercial about medication for reflux for adults!!!

Any grown ups here with reflux?

Sure, lots of grown ups have reflux (not me but some of my relatives do). Most people are cured with Prilosec, Prevacid, etc.

My mom has reflux. She is on a strict diet (no acid/citric food like tomato, orange, lemon, no coffee, etc), she doesn't eat after 8 pm (she goes to bed around 10) and her bed was elevated by the headboard so that when she lays down, food won't come back. From what you said, it does seem like you have either reflux or some other GI problem that is causing the reflux. Definitely check with your doctor.

Definitely talk to your doctor- untreated reflux is a risk factor for esophageal cancer.

Ditto - reflux is not just an annoyance. It is very serious if not treated. My father had reflux for a long time and died of cancer that may have started in the esophagus.
