Running trails clear? Hate to be the bearer of bad news, but some of us are still waiting for our streets to be plowed for the first time.

Do you have a stair stepper at home or something similar? I know it's not as good, but it's something.

I live in Chevy Chase DC and run into Chevy Chase Village--the streets are plowed there and it is low traffic--not trails but better than inside.

Don't risk it--even if something looks clear there could be ice. A friend of mine in Colorado got a severe concussion when she fell last month. The doctor told her she hit her head so hard that if she were to do it again it would probably kill her.

PLEASE be careful if you go. Saw someone out this morning running down the middle of the street because the sidewalks aren't plowed. And while I totally get the cabin fever feeling, that's really just not safe.

Alternatively - got any friends with snowshoes you could borrow? Not a run, but could be some good outdoor cardio.

Put on boots and "walk" through the high snow. It is very very tiring and great for the booty muscles. Although, it does lack that runner's high. It's more of a "OMG, will I make it home" feeling.

Thanks for the suggestions -- neither Avenel nor River rd trails are clear. It is clear around the Grosvenor so I might do that again. Anyone ever run the malls? during those early bird mall walking hours?

Try Rock Creek Parkway.

This trail coincides with Beach Drive for a while. The portion that is Beach Drive is plowed well for regular traffic. But Beach Dr is closed on the weekends.

Park near the Czech Rep. Embassy on Tilden. This picnic site has a small parking lot, water fountain, and bathroom.

PP here, By "closed during weekends" I mean closed to auto traffic, open for runners.

Yax Trax are good for running on ice or snow. Just make sure you get the kind for running, not just walking: http://www.yaktrax.com/ProductsPro.aspx

Avenel is clear now -- see ya out there!

I saw someone running in a fairly empty parking garage this weekend. Seemed pretty clever to me, but it would have to be relatively unused and you'd still have to be alert.
